The Obsession with Challenges

Ice Bucket Challenge, cold water challenge, Pixabar name challenge – these are the latest quests the knights of Camelot are offered are they? What happened to finding grails, slaying dragons and rescuing damsels in distress? Now it’s stick your head in a bucket of lard, post film of yourself in the bath on Youtube, or jump off a cliff challenges. How about a say no to the next person who challenges you to take a challenge-challenge? It used to be that when our children did something wrong and got caught their excuse was that someone told them to do it. We would then say something like; ‘if Tommy told you to punch yourself in the face would you do that?’ Nowadays, it seems we would do that, just because Tommy said it was a challenge and possibly for charity. While it can be fun to make fools of ourselves, we seem to be open to every whim anyone suggests nowadays – it is so widespread and indiscriminate that the value of such activity is lost because everyone does it. I once sat in a bath of peas for charity but now it is done so often by so many that no one notices or cares any more. Many such stunts are not organized by imaginative individuals but by businesses, obliging their workers to indulge to be able to look caring, while claiming the money back through tax loopholes for charitable donations. Many challenges seem to be indulged in by people jumping on a band-wagon. When my namesake king launched the Grail-quest challenge it was for a handful of knights – now such a quest-challenge would be launched by mass media with half the nation eager to join in, and TV celebs gushing about what progress we were making as we searched the realm, stopping to take selfies and throw custard over ourselves as we go. Arthur (taking the try to be less cynical today challenge) Chappell.

Very well said, I remember the ice bucket challenge, there are Bubblers who "nominated" others, I simply said NO!

Challenges became quite prolific on Bubblews for a while purely because it constituted an easy way to compose a post.

@Asylum I remember that they even decided to make challenges against the rules. They were becoming annoying there.

@Asylum I was fine with, do something nice and share, or, write something about X, but some were were really dumb

I nominated a "boiling water" bucket challenge as a counter challenge. For burnt victims, I was a bit upset, no one did it. I did do the ice bucket challenge in the summer, it was fun!

@Drosophila but verily pouring forth cold moat water on thy armour shall render thy visor most rusty

@arthurchappell well, there wasn't a dragon nearby to slay, lots of Celtic dragons from the irish folk lores are like sea serpents, these days due to overfishing and what-not the dragons prolly end up caught with tuna and sold to make cat food or somethink! Otherwise, I'd happily go and fish out one! (corrected lots of spelling issues)

The change in the overall approach to challenges was forced upon us by the fact that slaying dragons is no longer considered politically correct. It used to be considered fun until the WWF declared them an endangered species.

I love creative challenges.. On one site we used to have challenges like tell a story in 45 words.. no more no less.. on a given theme.. or write a poem on a given theme in 50 words and such. I am not game for these silly put your head in the ice bucket kind of challenge.. I always pass them by.. I can always do other stuff for charity.

I agree - creative challenges genuinely bring something out in us while silly challenges just seem frivolous - there is no skill in throwing a bucket of water over yourself

It somewhat reminds me of a commercial for a certain breakfast cerial, which gave what amounted to a nice sounding lecture, as if they cared, and then said they support this-well, really they were supporting themselves and looking 'nice'. I'm not sure if most of the people watching it didn't notice the inconsistent messages which were shown within the 30 second slot...I'm not sure if the producers cared...it was all just pitch for the company. The thing is, they were acting as if they were supporting a charity...but there was no charity mentioned...just a vague concept. They may as well have said we support cats with pink wigs for all that was really said and done...and the thing is by now, I too am cynical and would have probably responded better had there been support of a society for cats with pink wigs...I would have preferred it to the smoke and mirrors of their chosen non existent cause (which was really just their own brand).

@HebrewGreekStudies I think I someone did start a campaign for something as naff as cats in pink wigs there would be fun runs and sponsored custard juggling groups starting up to get it going

@HebrewGreekStudies The FSG started as a spoof but with serious intent to counter the perceived absurdities of creationism - many challenges are just publicity stunts disguised as altruism

@arthurchappell in some sense it would be curious, like in some sense kinda like the Spaghetti Flying Monster of the challenge world...and in that sense I wouldn't mind it except for the fact that where there are real needs...things may be akin to crying wolf, in a sense...which I realize was kinda what you were saying, we're just becoming deaf to it...but I wonder if in addition to being deaf, we may collectivly become blind as well...or in some sense unreachable. That's extreem, but it does cause me to wonder.

The only challenges I get involved in are writing challenges, and then I don't do it overmuch.
