the world of lost things

I spied a bicycle on my way to work this morning. It sat on its lonesome, leaning against a fence, randomly quirky because of its position in the middle of nowhere.
Quite literally, in the middle of nowhere. Not a place where somebody would leave a bike ... no shops, no work places, no bus stop, no houses, no anything, nothing.
The owner of the bike is probably looking for it, grumbling about their lack of transportation to work this morning. Why, oh why, did I not lock it up last night! they ask, head in hands, tears streaming down their face.
It made me wonder about the World of Lost Things. I suspect the bike's owner will assume it's travelled there, to live amongst the socks which never make it out of the washing machine, the words which get stuck on the tip of the tongue, the car we're pretty sure was parked over there in the car park, the house keys which mysteriously disappear {albeit briefly} from the bottom of the bag we're rummaging in, our minds which get lost in the gutter, and the loose change we popped in our pocket.
We can probably find anything in the World of Lost Things. It's just a shame that we can't travel there to reclaim our items.

Socks get lost, bikes get stolen. Obviously the thief didn't want the bike for good, only for a ride. Too bad the owner will never know where it ended up. The Boy had three bikes stolen and now he doesn't even want a bike. Just as well.

Ha haa i guess if we were to travel there we would be amazed by things we can find there. I am sure the place is parked to the full and more room is needed for the more that will get lost

I, too, have seen bikes (and shopping trolleys) abandoned in places which could not possibly be legitimate destinations for anyone riding or pushing them.
Perhaps it is really that those people have travelled to the entrance to the World of Lost Things on a bike or pushing a shopping trolley (so that when they find what they were looking for, they can wheel it back). Now, having found the entrance to that world, they have gone in but the entrance to the World is, itself, ephemeral, so that, if those who go in can ever find a way out, it will never be in the same place.

Yes, it's a shame. When I go to see my mother in Italy, every time I see abandoned bikes, some without the wheels. They were surely stolen and abandoned. To lock them is useless, because I also see many bike locks cut in the middle and abandoned on the pavement.
