My Car is at Death's Door

My car which is going on its 23rd year of life, and 10 years that I have had it, did not pass inspection and its rust in its frame is making people nervous to touch it. I guess that's it for it. I was hoping that it would survive the winter, but looks like that won't be happening after all.
I'm looking at a used car tomorrow to see what it has to offer. I can't afford a brand new vehicle, but I figure a car that lasts several years until I can trade in for a newer vehicle suits me just fine. The one I'm looking at is a 2010 model, which isn't that old comparatively.

not a bad year no, and not a bad idea to avoid brand new, less chance of recalls and such

@Jessicalynnt And new car smell is actually bad for you. By the time the car is old all the cancer causing agents are already inhaled by someone else. :P

The car is very nice and I have been driving it for a week now. It has some cosmetic issues, but aside from that it's very sporty and high class. It's a good car.

@Hatley I never go with the rule of three. I break the rules in those cases and just go with however long I can make things work out. :) You should try some of that approach as well!

My son is in the same position - his old car failed it's inspection and it would cost far more than it's worth to fix it. In the meantime he can use mine, which means he doesn't have to take the first car he comes across. I hope you get sorted soon.

I actually did start searching a few months ago for cars I thought would be interesting. And I have been placing calls around the region trying to find what I'm looking for. So tomorrow I have an appointment two hours away to see if it's something I want. If I like driving it I will take it. I saw the Carfax report, and it has had no accidents, 2 previous owners, and seems to be in working other. If it doesn't work out then I can trade it in later without being rushed.

@jaboUK Me too. The different reports say it has the best price comparatively. So I'm hopeful.

I just bought a new-to-me car, too. My old one was a good one, but it finally gave up a couple months ago.
We've always just paid cash for a good used one, but this time we didn't have that much to spare. I hate making payments!

It makes you wish they had increased longevity, but they just aren't built like the old cars that lasted forever.
I was eyeing my piggy bank, thinking I would need to bust it open and deposit the funds, but I think I have picked a vehicle with a low enough cost that I can hold it for a few years, and then trade it if I have the funds built up. Cash payments are good, because you don't have to pay interest.
