The good, the bad, and the ugly...

So today was Cary's IEP meeting. I had it on my calendar to be at the high school by 3:30, and told Cary he had to come to the meeting before. Made sure the ex knew about it also. Early afternoon, I get a text from the ex that he has a cold, and won't be able to make it. So I ask if he has any concerns. He gives me this rambling text about how Cary only does what he wants to, and he doesn't see him succeeding academically, and he almost might as well drop out and stock shelves. That ticked me off. I thought about it a bit, and told him he really needs to be there, cold or no cold. He said OK. So I'm driving to the school, and Cary calls to ask about the meeting. I tell him to be at the counseling office at 3:30. He calls back and says the meeting is NOW and wants to know if it's OK to put me on speaker. Oops, it started at 3, not 3:30. So the Special Ed teacher told me he went over school and career options with Cary. Cary thinks he wants to be an engineer, like a civil engineer, and go to the local Jr. College. I was really surprised (pleasantly). He also said we were on "certificate track" not "diploma track", and I said that wasn't correct. That we had agreed last year to put him on diploma track and see how he did. Anyway, it seems he's doing fairly well, and they are going to put him in a regular English clash now (with accomodations) so that he gets the credit towards graduation, and then we will put him in regular math, English, science and history next year (with accomodations), and see how it goes. He's doing much better than anticipated, and so much for his father's rather negative assessment.

Glad he's doing well, and that he has goals.

Wow, sounds like he's doing really well so far! Cary's lucky to have someone like you to go to bat for him and it seems like he has a good amount of support from the school, too. It's really unfair to say that kids like Cary might as well drop out and go stock shelves... a lot of the time, the only thing holding them back is others' expectations of them.

Yeah, I really didn't appreciate that comment but I was really happy to hear what he was interested in.

The ugliest part of this whole thing is his dad. How defeating his attitude is.

It is fantastic that Cary is doing so well in school and actually wants to go to college. I remember at that age I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do when I grew up, so he is way ahead of me and most of the other kids I knew at that age. I think once you know what you want to do so that you have a goal and something to work towards, then you have more motivation to do better.
