HOLIDAY SHAKERS

I'm starting to hear that ringing again. The unique sound of annoyance that can only come from a volunteer bell ringer for the salvation army. I have nothing against the volunteer or the salvation army, it's just that darn little bell with its' ding-a-linging clanking. It's true that I don't care much for the christmas season, but I assure you my hate for the mini bell does not center around the holiday. I just find the sound a nuisance to my ears and very bothersome. The pitch it hits leaves me with a headache at times. I even find cow bells less annoying. I wish that there was an alternative to the bell. I get it, the bell is a small, cheap, attention grabber that anyone can ring and it gets peoples ears to listen. In the past I have offered bell ringers money for thier bells only to be refused. I've had visions of taking one from a ringers fingers and very enthusiastically throw it to the ground, only to continuously jump on it with a spirit full of joy, a gleam in my eye and yelling in a voice of holiday cheer, "Ding Dong! the bell is dead. Which old bell? The ringing bell!" Why can't they be given a rain stick? A cow bell? Percussion shakers? Maracas? Or even a tambourine? I'd even settle for a volunteer playing a guitar and singing christmas songs. But until that day comes, I will just have to put my hands over my ears and fight the urge to confiscate the bell.

The ringing bell really doesn't bother me at all but we all have little things that irritate us.

@Plethos I love the bells. Maybe you should find a store that doesn't have bells.

There seem to be some of us that it affects more strongly than others. I'm hypersensitive to sounds at that pitch, and depending on the day I can find it anywhere from slightly annoying to migraine-inducing. Unfortunately, it's gotten bad enough this year that I'm actively avoiding stores that have bell ringers at them. I don't know if it's the fibro flare(s) or what, but I just can't take the noise.

@Plethos Now the question must be... Has anyone ever succeeded, or is that a challenge you are throwing out there, Plethos?

@DaddyEvil - nope and nope. im a lover not a fighter. besides, after you hit 30, you sorta leave the fighting to the young pups.

Wow! Scrooge! I've heard of people who are very sensitive to some sounds before... You are the first one who I've heard of with a problem with Santa's big brass ones, though!

they are good for attracting passers by but annoying to anyone in earshot of them for a long time - I was in a shop where the girl serving me and I couldn't hear each other because of a loud pipes playing busker right outside the store - she heard him over 6 hours that day alone

good reason as to why maybe we should always have ear plugs in our pockets

I wonder if the bell would bother you as much if you were one of the people the Salvation Army helps.

The cow bell would probably bring to mind memories of Christopher Walkin on SNL...which for a lot of us may inspire more giving...but could backfire into some weird improv. open mic session. Which...could be very...bad:). That said, I used to work in homeless shelters...so, I do agree with the work they do and...also appreciate the volunteers who give their time.
