Do You Compete With Your Neighbours At Christmas?

Perth, Australia
December 5, 2015 6:31am CST
Like with putting up your Christmas decorations? Personally I don't but I thought about this question because I am watching Home Improvement. If you know / like the show you will remember how Tim wanted to out do his neighbour when it came to decorating his house. Just wondering if anyone actually does this and how far you would actually go to make your house look good?

I'd like to compete with my neighbours in a competition to see who puts up the least decorations. Unfortunately my landlord puts up a couple.

Then it seems like you will be the winner or loser.

Bah-humbug! I thought it was supposed to be Lambie that was the Grinch. Don't tell me you are his long-lost twin brother from another mother?

haha Thank fully in the area I live in, not many people do it. I mean I love Christmas decorations but wouldn't want it right near my house with it being all bright etc. Thanks for answering Mike. I actually remember you from when I was last on here many years ago. :)

No I don't compete at all. In fact I don't decorate the outside of my house at all.

I put up a few lights and a wreath and that is about it for the outside as it is too windy and snowy here.

I don't really do much at all either besides putting up the Christmas tree. Thanks for answering.

I have watched Home Improvement but no I don't compete with my neighbors. Let me do whatever they want to do and I will do my thing.

I would totally do that! No, we do not compete with our neighbors. We do appreciate all the beautiful decorations and different and creative ways that people brighten and liven up their houses and yards this time of year, though. There are some people that go to extra lengths to make them beautiful, and I love looking at those places. I think that they are extra special, but that is just me.

I also like looking at the different decorations in town but some people have so many it must take hours to put them up and I could not be bothered with all that stuff.

@Marcyaz I love decorating, but it does take a lot of time. There is one elderly couple that always does their entire home and yard all up for just about every holiday you can imagine. It takes a lot of work, but they enjoy doing it. Everybody appreciates looking at it, too, because there are many that stop and tell them when they are out working in their yard.

Same here. I love looking at how people express themselves this time of the year. There are some rich areas around here that go all out and they do an amazing job. Thank you for answering.

My neighbors and I all work together to make sure our street looks beautiful during the holidays. We don't try to compete with each other or outdo each other, but instead work it out so there is a good balance of decorations at each house. However, I have seen neighborhoods where you can tell the neighbors are all trying to outdo each other. Nothing wrong with a little competition, but sometimes neighbors take it a little too far and they end up disliking each other because of silly Christmas decorations.

I think that is so sweet how you all do that. I love hearing of how neighbours get along so well. Makes me think we can actually be kind to each other. As for the people who do end up disliking each other, disappointing but not surprising. It's a shame it has to get out of hand like that. Thank you so much for sharing.

No, I am not a person who likes to compete. Moreover, we have our own budget, and we just decorate our house as we can and as we like. In fact, there isn't much decoration in my house. I enjoy seeing the beautiful decorations of other houses.

I like to see the decorations that others put out but I confine myself to lights on the Christmas tree and that is about it.

I never competed or compete with my neighbors over holiday decorations. But used to love to go see the homes where the owners went all out. Will never forget one home owner went so far as to have a blanket of snow on the ground. As if Santa in his sleigh and his reindeer on the rooftop wasn't enough. That was a big deal in Miami, Florida. WOW!! Fake snow on the ground!!

I live in the country, we only have two neighbors...so no competition going on here. We put lights up the last two years and this year..neighbors only put them up this year,,,so maybe they are trying to keep up with us.

I don't do anything with the outside of the house, though I would like to, I just don't have any outdoor outlets. So no, I don't compete.

I don't do the outside either. It wouldn't really matter if I did anyway for my house isn't on the street. I live in a unit so not directly on the street for people to drive / walk past. I just do the inside. Thank you for answering.

My neighbors can't even see my house, so there would be no point in it. There are some neighborhoods in my town where people do seem to do that though.

Not Christmas! "Diwali" is a festival celebrated all over the country. It is a Festival of Lights. So every single house / place / business place is lit up. Yup some compete too.

Unless your town is running a contest for best decoration, I do not see why you need to bother about it. There are many people who can't be bothered, and there are many people who do not celebrate Christmas.

I don't celebrate Christmas either. I did some research on the origins of Christmas and made a decision NOT to celebrate it anymore. Commercialized gift buying really turns me off. I like to give gifts but not because I feel obligated.
