Anyone living in the United States knows there will be no cost of living increase in Social Security and Veterans’ benefits for 2016. Now there has been a bill introduced to give the millions of people living on SS and Veterans’ benefits that well needed increase.
H.R. 4140 will give an increase of 1% to all these well deserved people. But in order for this bill to pass, we all need to contact our representatives.
This cost of living increase was denied for 2016 because the price of gas has gone down, however, this decrease in gas prices does not affect senior citizens as much as the rest the population. The cost of food has not gone down. The cost of medicine has not gone down. The cost of rent has not gone down. The cost of nearly everything except gas has not gone down. Many senior citizens don’t even drive.
So if you are a senior citizen or veteran or know senior citizens, such as your grandparents, or veterans or just feel this well deserving group of people needs this 1% raise in benefits, please contact your representative before Wednesday, December 9, and let them know you back this bill.
I know all U.S. senior citizens and veterans thank you for your support.

I hope you get this through. I think the way the US and the UK treat their Veterans is a black mark on their reputations and it is a shame x

What's so terribly sad is that a 1% increase is about seven bucks for Social Security recipients making $700 (which is about what my aunt's monthly check is), and $8 for a veteran with a 50% disability rating (those who can live long enough to get their disability ratings through the VA backlog, that is).
Meanwhile, Congress, where the salary is $174,000 a year (and where half of the members are already millionaires to begin with), says that's not enough to live on.

It is a very small raise. But if we don't get that raise then that money is lost forever. What I mean by that is if we get the 1% this year and another next year then next year's amount of the raise will be more than if we do not get the raise this year.
Another thing I heard several years ago about congress' salary is that if they didn't pay that much no one would run for congress. Or they would be getting unqualified (not so smart) people in congress. I don't think either one of this statements ring true.

I wish I had planned better for my retirement. My SS is ridiculous and would be happy with a little increase. You can be sure I'm contacting my representative
