Church on a Hill

When we were touring in our motor-home we stayed in the south-west of Bavaria in Germany. Our couch-surfing host, who we'd never met before, insisted on taking us on a guided tour the day after we arrived. We visited three amazing attractions and ended the day with a relaxed barbecue by the side of a lake. I walked so much that day that I'm sure I was an inch shorter at the end of it but it was worth every millimetre. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the first church we visited. It was high on a hill with a magnificent view over the surrounding countryside. Although it looked quite imposing from outside, it was indescribably ornate once you stepped through the door.
We were now in the region where wood-working had been developed to a very high standard. The ends of the pews looked like they'd come from sleighs. We learnt that the 'marble' pillars weren't marble at all but painted to look that way. After that we'd always tap the marble to see if it was genuine or not.
Across the front of the choir stalls were little paintings of everyday activities. We were also able to walk up the narrow, steep stairs to the bell-tower from where we could see for probably hundreds of miles. If not hundreds of miles, at least a very long way!

I got to see the view from the top of the steeple of Lincoln Cathedral - it was well worth the arduous climb - the view from your photo slides looks fabulous

@JudyEv yes, at one stretch we climbed a narrow winding spiral staircase and the only bannister was a thin rope. One slip and anyone would have bounced right down to the bottom - we also had to get through the bell tower before it hit the hour or it could have deafened us so quite exciting

Some of the churches were way over the top - much too ornate really but still nice to see.

My goodness, that church is amazing. Both the sculpture and the view were magnificent. I loved the pews too.

And this just seemed to be the local parish church. It wasn't in a huge town, in fact it was quite out of the way.

Us too , we go to a church up in a hill with a beautiful view of an active volcano. Herewith is a picture of it .
