My Nerd Shelf

Yes I have one. I used to subscribe to those once monthly boxes of goodies from various vendors of gaming, movie, and comic book memorabillia. I probably subscribed to three or four different boxes over a span of a year. I got to a point, however, when I said this is just ridiculous and stopped them altogether. At the beginning I Was getitng things I acutally liked, but it got to a point where the appeal was lost, and the money I was spending on "surprise" items could be spent on items I KNEW I'd like. My nerd shelf is now full of around 20 items. I will probably end up giving away half of those items and starting to purchase directly the things I like from my favorite genres. Of course some things that pique my interest really don't have a line of merchandise. Like Tudor History. One could hardly find a replica of poor Anne Boleyn's Severed head. Even so, I'd have to be truly morbid to want a keepsake such as that.

That is way too funny. I would never collect a lot of stuff like this. I guess I like a lot of space and besides I would like to see what I am getting and not open a box of surprises that I had no idea what to do with them all. Maybe they will make some great gifts for people here and there.

We always knew the theme so we had an idea of what might be inside. Out of each box I would give away maybe two or three items instantaneously. I don't do the boxes anymore though because in all honesty it became more and more of things I was giving away. I come from a family of collectors, I have an uncle with one whole room dedicated to his favorite singer of all time. A grandfather with a room dedicated to comic books and comic book merchandise. I don't want to dedicate an entire room, one shelf will do.

@poehere My ex mother in law always collected shot glasses from each place they visited as well, or her husband would pick them up when he was a trucker.

@ScribbledAdNauseum That is amazing. I only use to pick up a shot glass from each country or place I had to work or visited. I never had much other need for other things and shot glasses are tiny and easy to store and get rid of if needed.

I subscribe to a couple of beauty box services. I give away at least half the stuff I get - but I quite enjoy giving it away.

The beauty boxes aren't my thing. I thought about getting one for my sister at one time but I don't know what she prefers, her skin tone or skin type either.

@boiboing Yes, I would have wanted it to be a surprise and there was no way to ask her beauty questions without her getting suspicious. I don't wear makeup and she knows I know very little about it.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Then best not to buy that for her. BUT with a lot of them, she gets to specify what she wants.

With four daughters, I signed up for a cosmetic club when they were teens. It worked well, because there were always things in the box that at least one of the girls wanted!

I thought about gifting a subscription to a cosmetic box to my sister at one point but I just don't know. I know she wears makeup but what she prefers or even what her skintone is? I have no idea. I'm not a make up type person myself.

That's cool though. I used to collect Barbies.

It's nice getting surprises in the mail but I can understand that they gradually accumulate.

I actually unsubscribed from these boxes months and months ago. I think I received my last one in March or a little before that.
