Here Is A Totally Unfunny Funny Story For You

I hate people who tell you in advance that the story they are about to relate is extremely funny and how much you’ll be laughing by the time the story ends. Somehow, you just know the story is going to drag on for some time, prove to be extremely boring and the punchline, if there even is one, will be about as funny as a bereavement.
The story teller won’t notice you yawning or losing the will to live as they’ll be too busy adding their own laughter track and reminders of the plot so far and laughing at the memory of the event and previous recitals. They may be slightly affronted when finally ending their Homeric epic hopeless opus presentation if at best you offer a polite smile and pleasant quick giggle rather than collapsing to the floor with your sides splitting open in sheer merriment.
Beware less they start telling the story again in case you missed the important bits last time round.

Yeh, in general when someone says that to me that is my immediate feeling. When ppl say "Here's a joke for you" it is the linguistic equal of someone throwing a wet blanket on me...things seem funnier if they are conversational...and if they aren't funny, then it's at least conversation. Oddly enough, it's the same reason why I tend to have trouble listening to sermons. After years of doing exams, getting grilled, all I can really think of is oh wow if I was your professor you would be rewriting that and I would be asking you to do a bit more research.

I agree - though an unbeliever I am astonished many priests and vicars I see giving sermons at weddings and christenings hold anyone's attention at all - there are a few exceptions but most are very dull in their presentations

I find the same thing is often true about movies. If someone tells me a film is hilarious I'm more likely to avoid it. I don't like being told how I'm supposed to react.

. If they expect you to laugh it can put your back up, it's much better to surprise people into laughing, don't you agree?
