Occasionally, I'll be doing something and catch a piece of dialog from a children's tv program or from an advert on the radio... Nothing so strange in that, you might think, it happens all the time! But the voice will ring a bell somewhere at the back of my mind, a ding of recognition: Where have I heard that voice before? Below are several examples to whet your appetite. How many times have you been left thinking "I know that voice" for a while before the lightbulb goes on...? The narrator in "Sarah & Duck", on UK children's TV, has the cool, calm and mellifluous tones of Roger Allam. Allam's is a voice I associate with an excellent BBC Radio 4 comedy, "Cabin Pressure", by John Finnemore, with additional voice talents of the writer, of Benedict Cumberbatch and of Stephanie Cole. The giant in Roald Dahl's BFG animated film from 1989 is that of David Jason, a voice I associate with many fine TV and radio performances over the years, including "Open All Hours", on BBC TV and some episodes of the original radio series "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". Bob the Builder's voice, by Neil Morrissey, of the TV comedy "Men Behaving Badly". The Narrator in the early UK Mister Men series is Arthur Lowe (Captain Mainwaring of Dad's Army fame). Tim Curry, from the Rocky Horror Picture Show, voices the grey parrot in "Rio" as well as Nigel Thornberry in "The Wild Thornberries". Of course, not forgetting Steve Carell as Gru in "Despicable Me", with a superbly apt YouTube clip for this post below:

It does bug me when I can't identify a voice.

This has happened to me many times, especially since so many actors from television series voice over adverts these days. I have a similar issue with music. Many television adverts incorporate extracts from operas, which catch my attention as soon as they begin. Of course they stop before I recall the source and the music on the next one destroys my chain of thought. Many times I have heard the same advert 4 or 5 times before I finally place the music to the opera.

@pgntwo There was a car advert some years ago that used Nessun Dorma as the background music, but the voice was familiar and it did not last long enough for me to place. Eventually I realised it was Jussi Bjorling, a Swedish tenot with a very distinctive voice.

@Asylum That's just what it's like - enough to make you listen for it every time.

Be glad you know who it is. What drives me crazy is not being able to figure it out.

My husband and I will try to guess the voices on animated movies. If we cannot guess it I will normally look up the movie cast and crew. I hate recognizing a voice and not being able to place it with a face.

Seems to be a common sentiment in the responses to this discussion.

The internet and IMDB make checking far to easy - no more arguments while waiting for the credits to roll...

My speciality is identifying actors from The Archers who I've heard for years on the radio when they eventually break cover and appear on TV.

That's a pretty neat party trick, @boiboing! As much as the Archers is a UK national institution, I've never been hooked. As soon as the last strains of the Minute Waltz, or One Song to the Tune of Another, fade away, there are 3 mins of news and then it's over to anywhere other than R4.
