She could've been...

Have you ever known someone who had a talent for something and got great joy out of doing it. However... I have spoken in the past of my friend, Elaine, who died too soon of ovarian cancer in 1998. Elaine was a talented story teller. She could've probably been a good, maybe not great, but good actress, except... Elaine was homely. Not quite bad enough to be full scale ugly, but certainly not pretty. Because of a fouled up surgery on her ear as a teen or young adult, she had a bit of paralysis on her face. I don't even know if she was really aware of it, but it did become apparent pretty quickly. So, she became a children's librarian. Her story times, her puppet shows were very popular. Because she liked children, some of the children who used to come to story time used to later come to the library and help her after school. She also entered costume contests, generally with another friend, and they sang filk songs. Songs that Elaine generally wrote the lyrics to. Now, when I was young, and skinny, I was attractive, maybe not a great beauty, but if she had my looks, she might've tried to go in to some kind of acting, even if just local theater. I had wanted to be a librarian at one point, but as much as I love books, I don't really people. So, do you know someone like Elaine, who had the passion for and the talent for something but something entirely out of their control kept them from any chance of making a career out of it?

She always tried to see the best in people. No, there aren't too many like her around.

I had my looks, great body and great personality but chose to be the brownie lady to help others in the world who had no one else to turn to

A career on the stage isn't for everyone. There are compromises that some people aren't willing to make. For others, there are other goals they'd rather pursue... like helping other people.

Well people tell me I have a great singing voice, and I love doing it. But...I have horrible stage fright that I have never been able to get past. My youngest daughter can sing, dance and act but we don't have the finances to take her to auditions-she would make a career out of one of the above if we had the means for it.

I hear ya about stage fright, even if I had a talent for that kind of stuff, I wouldn't be able to do them. Honestly, if your daughter really wants to make a career out of one of them, she'd find a way.

I didn't know her and everyone has different opinions how what beauty is but I'm sure she probably would've made a great actress. it's sad that she wasn't able to do what she could've really been good at.

Elaine wasn't one of those people that stood out, and, unless you were in Houston back in the 1990's and either went to her branch of the public library or was in fandom, you probably didn't ever meet her.

It's a pity if someone can't reach their true potential because of their looks.

I agree. It seems that looks are so important that sometimes people are not going to be successful just because of it.
