A Profile in Courage

There was an article on CNN this morning that told of a group of Muslim women who stood up to jihadist terrorists in Kenya earlier this week. The terrorists stopped a bus and ordered the nearly 100 passengers, mostly women, off the bus and told them to separate by religion (Muslims on one side, Christians on the other). These terrorists frequently do this: they'll let the Muslims go and slaughter the non-Muslims. The women on the bus, however, refused. They told the men with the guns, "Kill us all, or leave us alone." They hid some passengers and let others borrow hijabs so the terrorists couldn't differentiate by manner of dress who was and wasn't Muslim. As a result, nearly 100 lives were saved when the terrorists left. It's good to see these women stand up for their religion and, for once, take it back from the terrorists cowering behind the name of religion. (I'm also particularly amused that a bunch of misogynistic men were put in their place by women. ) Throughout World War II countless Christians put their lives on the line to rescue Jews from the slaughter, frequently being killed along with the people they were trying to shield. It's quite courageous to stand up for yourself, but even more so to put your life on the line for someone else. Could you do it? Or would you sit silently and hope the bullets went past you? The CNN story:
When Al-Shabaab militants ambushed a bus in Kenya and ordered the Muslims to separate themselves from Christians, the passengers refused.

I would hope that I would stand proud and help those I could. I am not religious but I would hope that I would stand beside those that were and help where I could. I think you learn a lot about yourself when tested in such a way.

I think you're so right. It's very easy for us, sitting comfortably in the U.S. with Constitutionally-protected rights, to say, "Oh, you bet I'd stand up for my faith!" Ironically, one of the two people who were killed in this attack was a Christian, trying to run away.

That's an excellent story. It's important for people of principle, regardless of religion, to stand up.

Great story of people having the courage to stand up for the right. I think we'd all like to believe we'd have that kind of courage if faced with a similar situation. But it wouldn't be easy.
