When most people think of Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, they actually envision the Magic Kingdom theme park, which is only one of several theme parks that make up Walt Disney World!
The Walt Disney World Resort comprises over 27,000 acres of land, covering 40 square miles. The state of Florida granted Disney World it's own governmental powers, and the governing body of Disney World is called the Reedy Creek Improvement District. With it's own legislative powers, Disney World essentially operates as it's own "city." In fact, Disney World is so large, it is the equivalent to a city of 125,000 people! At any given time, there are over 74,000 Disney employees (called Cast Members) working in the Orlando area. Walt Disney World is not actually in Orlando, but in unincorporated Orange and Osceola Counties.
The following are the theme parks that make up the Disney World complex, along with the year they opened: Magic Kingdom (1971); Epcot (1982); Disney-MGM Studios (1989); Typhoon Lagoon (1989); Blizzard Beach (1995); Disney's Wide World of Sports (1997); Downtown Disney (1997); and Animal Kingdom (1998).
Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach are water parks, and both consistently rank in the top 5 most visited water parks in the world. In 2008, Disney-MGM Studios was renamed Disney's Hollywood Studios. In 2015, Downtown Disney was renamed Disney Springs. Downtown Disney/Disney Springs is a huge shopping and entertainment district and is almost considered a theme park in and of itself!
Currently under construction in Animal Kingdom is a new section of the theme park that will be called Avatar Land. In addition, beginning this year Disney announced plans to reinvent the entire Disney Hollywood Studios theme park into two new distinct theme parks, Toy Story Land and Star Wars Land.
There are 27 Disney resorts in Disney World, and 9 non-Disney resorts, as well as one campground. Another interesting fact is that Disney "owns" its own city, called Celebration, that is located adjacent to the theme parks! Celebration has about 11,000 residents living in the town.
As you can see, there is more to Disney World than just the Magic Kingdom, although the Magic Kingdom will forever remain the central and main attraction of Walt Disney World!

The last time I was "carded" was at the adult "land" at Disney World in Orlando. I was forty at the time. Such silliness.

These days, if anyone cards me, I just want to give them a big hung and squeeze them tight and thank them for making me feel young again! lol

@moffittjc I laughed, pointed to my salt and pepper hair (mostly salt), and said, "You're kidding, right?"

I'm flying out of Orlando tonight to head to New York City, and I'll pass right right by Disney World on my way to the airport. Which sucks because I wish I had more time to stop and visit Disney. Today is the grand opening of their new Avatar Land at Disney's Animal Kingdom, and I really wanted to be there for the grand opening.

@moffittjc I'm sorry you won't be able to have more time there.
Hope you had a good time in New York though!

@VivaLaDani13 I had a wonderful time in New York. Of all the places I've been in the world, it's my absolute favorite city. I would love to live there someday!

@LadyDuck Old Key West Resort is one of the few hotels I have not stayed at yet! I've visited the resort and walked around the lobby/check-in area, but have never stayed in a room there. It's on my list...someday, I hope to be able to say that I stayed in each and every resort in Disney World at least once!

Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, is the flagship location for the worldwide Disney empire, and is also the world's most popular theme park. It is estimated that more than 17.2 million people visit Walt Disney World each year. That's a lot of people visiting one location!

@moffittjc Excuse me! The flagship location is in Anaheim, CA. Orlando is much larger and gets more visitors now, but it does not have the history of the original Happiest Place on Earth.

Disney should be paying me for "selling" their theme park to potential visitors! Pack up and head down to the Happiest Place on Earth!

As many people find out, Disney is not for everyone! But I think everyone should try to experience it at least once in their lifetimes!

And it will continue to grow in the coming years, but the Magic Kingdom will still be my favorite,

Yes, and the Magic Kingdom continues to grow as well! Have you been since they expanded Fantasyland! It is more than twice the size it used to be!
