She cancelled her subscription, but she still receives magazines

Some time ago my mother-in-law started subscripting to a magazine about history. She didn't find the magazines very interesting and she decided to cancel her subscription. She contacted them and they told her that they weren't going to send her anymore magazines....but she still receives magazines from them. Now my husband has called them and told them one more time that my mother-in-law wants to cancel the subscription. We will to have to wait and see what happens now. My parents experienced a similar thing. They joined a book club, they received books for a while and then they decided to cancel the membership. The book club kept sending them books, and they had to contact the book club several times in order to stop the books. Did you ever try to cancel a membership or a subscription without success?

It happens that a magazine continues to send a few numbers after you have canceled your subscription. Once the subscription is canceled, they cannot ask you to pay them. Here they cannot even ask you to return the magazines, so it would not be a big problem.

I am not sure what kind of rules we have about returning the magazines. First my mother-in-law cancelled the subscription and they told her on the phone that they weren't going to send her more magazines or bills. When they continued to send the magazines my husband called them, and they told him on the phone that she didn't cancel her subscription and they are going to send her one more bill.

@Porcospino That is really not fair. If they are doing like this, the best would probably be to cancel the subscription with a charged letter.

@topffer Yes, it is not fair. My mother-in-law is angry about the extra bill, and I understand that. What do you mean by a charged letter?

Magazines are notorious for continuing to try to get a person to keep buying their magazine. I would write to them, have it in writing, that you cancelled this subscription for your mother in law and that you are no longer liable to be paying for them. As long as you have it in writing, there is little they can do to make you pay, I believe.

It sounds like a good idea to write them. My mother-in-law cancelled her subscription on the phone, but when my husband called them they claimed that she never cancelled her subscription and they asked her to pay an extra bill. It is hard to prove what she has said on the phone.

@TiarasOceanView That behaviour is one of the reasons why I don't like to subscribe to magazines or join book clubs. I have experienced a similar situation when I joined a book club

Either that is a way to get customers to keep paying, or else the various departments are not talking to each other. Sometimes the delivery is made by a service provider. When you send in the request to cancel, the request does not get through to their vendor. It is better that you call, and send in email as a written confirmation.

In many cases they do it on purpose in order to earn more money, but it is true that it could be a communication problem in some cases. Yes, it is best to write them. If you only cancel the subscription on the phone it is hard to prove what you said.

I have never gotten books or magazines through the mail. I buy them when I want to read them.

I do the same thing. I prefer to buy the things I want to read.
