Seeing the Grand Canyon was a once in a lifetime experience

There are some experiences that can be just as great the 100th time you do them as the first. For me, watching snow fall is like that. It never gets old. But there are other pleasures in life that can be experienced only once. My first sight of the Grand Canyon is in that category. When I looked for the first time from the top of the canyon down into that vast chasm, the sight hit me with almost physical impact. The magnitude of what I was seeing almost overwhelmed my senses. I can't really describe it because no words can convey the reality of that experience. But we human beings are marvelously adaptable. I know that if I returned to the Grand Canyon today, it would still be a great sight, but it wouldn't affect me on anything like the scale of the first time I saw it. That first time was literally a once in a lifetime, never to be repeated experience. I can never again see the Grand Canyon as I saw it for the very first time. But I'm so grateful to have the memory.

My daughter went to the Grand Canyon but couldn't see a thing as it was shrouded in mist. That was a long way to go from England to see that! She couldn't fit in the time for another visit.

I agree with Valerie. That must have been a tremendous disappointment.

@RonElFran It was. We were on leave - vacation - from the military and on our way back to Chicago where his folks lived and we drove straight through from San Diego. We went through Flagstaff. No matter what I said, I couldn't convince him otherwise. He was the same way when we were laid over in Hawaii on our way to Guam, he had already seen Diamond Head. I had to be content to see it from the plane window.

I would really love to see the Grand Canyon. I almost did once, but my husband had already seen it and didn't want to see it again.

I can understand how it would feel very special. I can't remember when I've felt quite like that although some magnificent buildings have affected me in a similar way.

I love looking at the marvelous things God has created! It's absolutely breathtaking. I felt that way the first time I saw the ocean. I felt so small standing on the beach and looking out at all that water. :-)

I remember looking out at the ocean and finding it hard to believe there could be that much water in the world!
