How do you view blood transfusions?

The Bible has a lot to say about blood.
Israelites were forbidden to eat blood. Christians were commanded to abstain from blood.
Muslims and Jews do not eat blood while others view it as a delicacy.
Growing up we would kill a pig once a year, collect the blood, and cook it and enjoy eating it. I no longer do that as I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses and we neither eat blood nor accept blood transfusions.
Some doctors view blood transfusions as life-saving and some view them as dangerous as many diseases such as AIDS and hepatitis are spread through blood and blood transfusions.
What is your experience with blood transfusions and how do you view blood transfusions?

some of my experiences and some other experiences are found in the link below.
After reading a post by Ajmal about the importance of blood donations, I wanted to add my thoughts on it. For years I donated blood at local Red Cross drives....

I have to believe that God sent the knowledge to man to help one another. And I ma thinking that this day and time that a person should be able to extract their own blood and have it stored safely so that one day if they need blood it can be their own.
How do you feel about that?

We must keep in mind that man makes nuclear bombs, did that also come from God?
I am not here to tell you what you should do or not do, that is your decision. We are just discussing an issue, blood transfusions.
Personally, I think that God knows best and if he gave us detailed instructions on avoiding blood, then there must be a good reason, so I will go with that and that is why I meticulously study the Bible myself and even though I belong to a religion, I must still make my own decisions based on how I understand the will of God. I personally avoid blood in any form and shape because that is how I understand the instructions in the Bible. (Acts 15: 20, 29)
Friends are allowed to disagree and I'm ok with that!

"...and some view them as dangerous as many diseases such as AIDS and hepatitis are spread through blood and blood transfusions."
- doctors are not idiot to not examine first the person of possible infections in the blood before doing blood extraction and transfusion.

@1hopefulman it's a human error and not a disease which you pinpointed in your discussion.

Thanks for sharing your experience and I'm happy your husband is still alive!
Here is a different result from taking a blood transfusion.

@1hopefulman There will always be arguments both for and against, with each side bringing out examples to back up their opinions. I'm willing to bet that more lives have been saved by receiving blood than those that have been lost by doing so.

Thanks for the link to my post. I respect your beliefs, and there probably are times when a transfusion was either contaminated or even unnecessary. But I believe I might not have survived if I had not received those transfusions recently.

This post was inspired by your post.
I have known of some people that the doctors have said they would die without a blood transfusion and refused and didn't die, including my daughter. Each experience is unique. People die in the hospitals all the time by taking certain treatments and by not taking the same treatments. I a not here to judge or to tell someone else what to to or not to do. But a little research will reveal the truth about blood treatment. However, I do not partake of blood in way because of what the Bible says in the book of Acts chapter 15 and that us my personal decision.

I donate hood from time to time. (Sometimes my Hgb is too low) For an accident victim I have no problem with a blood transfusion. For a 90 year old woman who is dying, and who has refused the transfusion, why try to push it on her.

As a medical student, it makes me feel sad that there are people out there who would rather die from things that could have been easily treated because they view blood transfusion as evil. People who lose plenty of blood from accidents would die without it. There are also people with illnesses who need blood transfusion to live. Sure, there are viruses out there that could be delivered through sharing blood, but hospitals and volunteer groups do their best to make sure that the blood they get come from healthy people.
