Snow Brings Out the Idiots and the Maniacs Here

George Carlin had a great routine about driving. He said, "Have you ever noticed that all the people driving slower than you are idiots, and all the people driving faster than you are maniacs?" It seems snow brings them out in this part of the world. Living on the edge of the south, people in Kentucky do one of two things: they poke along at 2 MPH from the time the weather forecast mentions snow in the 10-day outlook (or even if someone plays a Hank Snow song on the radio! ), or they hop in the SUV they bought after the state was shut down for a week by a blizzard in 1994 and do their Tony Stewart impersonation, blowing snow onto the windshield of the snow plows as they wiz by. I think the reason for this is we don't really know how to deal with it here. I was in Chicago over the New Year's holiday, and the roads were spotless. My hotel's parking lot was shoveled and the sidewalks salted. Here, however, they decided to wait until the snow started falling to treat the roads. Oh, sure, they put brine down yesterday, but as for the "serious" treatment, it's nowhere to be seen. Apparently they only want to plow once (typical government employees ). I stayed home from work today. I don't want to be out with the idiots and the maniacs. Here's the clip of Carlin:

I live in Idaho and when we have winter here the people driving SUVs think they know the road and many end up off the side of the road. As I creep by I have to laugh when I see them for I know that just a few minutes before they were whizzing by like a maniac thinking they were invincible.

They don't know how to deal with in any any southern state. That's a given.

I try to adjust my driving to road conditions. The road we live along runs north south, so there are always drifting conditions to watch for.
