Got a Enough Done Around Here to Get Me Started

I've been trying to stay away from here for a bit in order to try to get several things done around my house. Ever since starting to write for HubPages and then Bubblews in 2013 I've put organizing and filing on the back burner. That burner is almost ready to cave in it's getting so heavy. I've been working on cleaning stuff up. Enough time has passed that I can shred a large portion of the paperwork, but I still have to file a decent portion too. I made several dents in the room where I've been dumping stuff and I've gone through some drawers getting rid of old, unnecessary bills and such. Now that I've made a good start, it's much easier to take care of a portion when I have a few minutes. Another thing I've been trying to accomplish is finishing up my tax stuff for our business for this last year. I did much better this year in keeping up with things, but got stuck on October's receipts and payments. A while back I organized things on my desktop so I could go through it quickly and then company came over and I had to put everything away into a drawer. Later, I couldn't find it all even after looking everywhere. Today, I finally found what I needed. Then I had to print my bank statements off the internet, but my firefox program was missing something needed for access. After trying various things most of the afternoon, I had the idea to reboot my computer; doing so took care of that issue. I still have to process my reconciliation reports, but I'm hoping to fly right through the rest. I should be done next week, I hope, and then I can make an appointment with my accountant and get that next step done too. Oh, I almost forgot, yesterday, I also began and finished processing my W-2's for my employees. All that is left is to double-check what I typed in, add a few change of addresses and print it all out. Then I can submit my report. Yesterday, and today was my weekend and it's back to work tomorrow, but I'll be around a little bit more, or at least that's my plan.

Well it sounds like you have accomplished quite a lot. I really love being here in Florida where my house is so uncluttered and I have no obligations. I am getting quite spoiled.

@MarshaMusselman Okay I will be honest, I brought four containers of paperwork with me. Two are travel related and two are my Florida bills and the last one has all my checkbooks for all three homes so I can pay whatever bills come up plus I need to send a check to the nursing home before the 10th of each month.

@BelleStarr Well at least you can do all of that in warmer weather and without having to shovel any snow and that sort of thing.

If I ever get to go to Florida or any other warm state for the winter, I'm sure I'd need to take some of my paperwork with me unless I had the cash to get it all done before the foul weather set in. And, if I do ever get to do that, we might just be working down where ever we went anyway, which includes more work on the side, but the benefits would be nice too. Warm days, more sun shine than I'm used to for the winter months.

It sounds like you have made a great start Marsha and hopefully what you have already achieved will be an inspiration to continue along this path of being organised.

@maggs224 I'd ask what that means, but I could just look it up myself.Never mind. Already did that. Baby steps, yes, little by little.

That's what I'm hoping, but I've already come to a standstill. Hopefully it won't be forever. I've still been working on the books part of it, just not much else this week.

I have noticed that you were not around a lot, I see you had plenty of tasks to complete first and still a lot of work to do.

@MarshaMusselman I always say to my husband he should get rid of plenty of stuff. We have no children, so the niece should take care of this one day.

@MarshaMusselman The thought of leaving boxes of papers for my kids to deal with is my motivation, too. We cannot deny getting older and facing the inevitable.

I've always had loads to do, just pushed it aside to be on B instead. I don't want my kids to have to sift through things after I pass, which I don't expect to happen for twenty years or more, but I'm sure the older I get the harder it will be to want to do it myself.

I've been going through a similar process to yours in that I've been online less while I go through old papers, trying to decide what to do with them. Mine are not business related, though. They are old poems and bits of writing that I'm combing through. Much of it is going into the fire but I've also found some forgotten gems.

@MarshaMusselman It's a time consuming process, but worth taking the time to do it.

@Sheilamarie78 Better that we do it than another member of the family once we're gone. And it will be exciting to see the accomplishment whenever that may happen.

I have a little of that, too, in old notebooks. That's one reason don't want to just throw them away without looking through them first.

Today, I got all the record keeping done for January's mystery shops and the receipts filed away. That is one small step towards all I need to do. But at least I did it rather than adding it to the pile of undone work! See, you inspired me!

Hey, cool! Now I just need to re-inspire myself over again. I'm stuck here in mylot world trying to gain one dollar before my bank goes back to zero. I gained twenty cents today somehow. I've done that before, but not lately and it's nice. But, if I keep hanging out here, I won't get the rest taken care of. I did get my w-2's out in record time. If you don't know what those are, employers send them to employees before the end of January. We all need them to file our taxes correctly. I still need to dig out my expense pile and put those into the computer, and then find certain things and make an appt with my tax guy. If I can get that done this next month, I'll be a lot earlier than usual.

@paigea In Canada, are the employers expected to have those out by a specific time? Here it's understood that they are in the mail before the end of the month. I could do it by the end of December, but rarely do, since we're barely working then.

@MarshaMusselman That is a good start getting the w-2s out in record time. We get T-4s from out employers. I have only received one so far.

Good for you. I have a great built in desk in the office with two places for office chairs and two sets of filing drawers and other drawers. And it is a huge mess! Time for me to tackle what you have done. Like you, some of it is probably just ready to be discarded.

I'd do a before picture, but it would be too embarrassing. I have a built in desk in that room too. The drawers aren't too bad, but stuff is even piled up on the floor and on the filing cabinet, which has five drawers and is full. I have another filing cabinet-two drawer next to my desk in the kitchen along with box filers too.

@paigea my drawers and cubbies are mostly filled already. I did redo one cupboard area and was able to fit a box containing all the bandages and related wound care into that area, to get it out of the room and store in an accessible location.

@MarshaMusselman Oh, mine would be too embarrassing too! And given all the cupboards in that room, there is just no excuse

It's always good to catch up with all the paper work, even more so being able to discard that which is no longer necessary. I'm far better now than I was a few years ago.

I spend most of my time here the two days I get off, but I've been trying to be here a bit each day, while doing other things too, so we'll see whether I can continue with it all and fit it all in. I'd like to get my taxes done early. If It works out, I can then apply for help from work. They've given out quite a few thousand to needy families for medical bills and such and it would be nice to get a few things paid down. It will be easier to apply once I know exactly what our income/expenses were last year.

@MarshaMusselman I am glad that you have sorted so much out Marsha and I hope that you are able to get something from work towards paying stuff down.

There will always be sorting and organizing to do, I'm sure, but hopefully one day/year, not so much.

If I was organized, I wouldn't be behind, I'd have kept up as I went. I'd say I'm well-intentioned, but that doesn't cut butter too well. I feel like I accomplished a lot in the two days, but mainly I got a good start and now it seems easier to want to continue making progress rather than continuing to put it off as I've done in the past. We'll see how long this zeal lasts.

I still have a long way to go, it's just that now I'm hoping I'll use more free time to get at things rather than putting it off any longer. Got my Oct statement reconciled finally just a bit ago and got started on November. It won't take long to finish as we begin to slow down about then, although this year with it being warmer we worked a bit more than normal. I'm itching to get at another stack in the bedroom to go through and include in the shred bag, but will have to wait until tomorrow.
