A Little Restoration to Achieve Goals

The barn, the driveway, and the walkway from my house to where I park my car are all grassy. Too often it gets muddy (well, currently it's all frozen) and it makes it difficult for vehicles to come and go. It would be good to put rock down to prevent this, but is it really needed? Or is just time and effort enough to get it done?
I found out when I dug down that there is plenty of gravel just beneath the grass - it was there to begin with! I just have always known it to be grass there. So the question is whether to peel the grass away and expose what's already there, or put more rock down on top.
Peeling the grass away will take time and effort, and it may take a long time. Putting rock down is faster and gets the job done, but it costs money. I hate to spend money on something already there, and if I leave the mud there the rocks may be encased in a few years.
We tried to go fast before, but the gravel company wasn't responding a month ago. In the mean time, while the weather was warmer I peeled back several yards of grass, and now it's rock in those places. So do I peel back more when spring hits, or spend money for gravel? I'm kind of torn!
I think the solution might be to peel back grass around the house and barn where the rock is thick, and get a little for the driveway, since that is too long to do by hand. What do you think? (peeling the grass was fun to me)

I just got new snow tires a week ago. They aren't studded, but they work great!

@OneOfMany I've been grateful for the studs since before Christmas. Our driveway road was a nightmare even before I hit the regular road. I'm glad your tires are working for you.

@sallypup Me too. I had to drive 2 hours to get my car fixed under warranty and the part wasn't there, so they wanted to hold my car there. But they wanted to rent me a car that doesn't have snow tires and is too small for me. I asked them if they were seriously trying to kill me. They said they could only give me a similar car, and that was in no way remotely similar. In the end I took my car back. The fools.
