Staying with Friends in Premnitz, Germany

Premnitz is situated on the river Havel in the Havelland district, Brandenburg, Germany. It was once an important centre for producing synthetic fibres but now industries more in harmony with contemporary environmental policies are being developed. We were told that the drains from the textile factories ran into the river and, depending on the colour of the dye used on a certain day, the river would run red, green, yellow or whatever. Population peaked in 1971 in the high 13,000s but is now down to 8,000. Our friend said, before the Berlin Wall came down, everyone in the town was employed, child-care was provided for all and there was a highly efficient education system. These things did not necessarily remain once the wall came down. The garden at the house was very attractive and featured a lovely husky, some goldfish and rabbits as well as beautiful flowers. One a walk through the town, we saw some very realistic paintings which transformed various utility and other eye-sores into attractive sights. There are certainly some talented people around.

Did I spot some Koi fish too? That Husky was adorable. And the art on the side of the building very creative. Glad you had a great visit there @JudyEV .

The fish were lovely - as was the husky. I'm a bit sad that I've forgotten her name but she was a lovely dog.

I always have trouble trying to work out how to add music so mostly I don't bother with it.

I wonder if the ability to travel where ever you want in the world offsets some of the perks of the socialist system.

Our friend said his father, while thrilled that his son had been able to travel so much before settling down, was always very envious as he had not had the same opportunity.

The street art was so realistic. The same man had done others in nearby towns too.

@JudyEv I imagine it was. I would love to take a tour around older cities to see the culture and architecture of the city. I am sure it was a beautiful walk.

@just4him The childcare building was huge but all the windows were broken and the place was falling down. It was good to have our friend tell us all about the system from years before and how things had once been.

Did East Germans come to town thinking they'd find employment that just wasn't there?

I love the idea of painting mundane items to turn them into works of art. They should do that in other places, too.

We saw it from time to time in most countries. Often it seemed the same artist had made his mark in an area rather than in just one town.
