"And you think I don't know that?"

My 5 level 3 nursing learners were once again assigned in Ward 3, handling 9 clients at 2 per student, while one who had one client was assigned as medication student nurse.
A client was diagnosed with Acute Coronary Syndrome R/O Acute Myocardial Infarction, and we noticed that his blood pressure was low at 90/50mmHg since yesterday. This was endorsed properly to the staff nurse, so she should be the one to refer the client to the resident on duty.
This morning, the BP of client RR was still at 90/50; the staff nurse then told me that we should add a side drip of Levophed to keep the blood pressure within normal range. I called my student to prepare the side drip at the nurses’ station. I asked how many microdrops should the side drip flow, and one newly-hired staff nurse answered 10mgtts/minute.
What irked me though was her comment that “Levophed actually increases the blood pressure”, so I replied with a sarcastic tone of “Yes, I know that”. She immediately apologized and kept on saying SORRY to me. She blushed.
Although we health care providers should be humble in dealing with the patients under our care, that does not give one the privilege to show-off and be boastful. We learn through continuing knowledge and we must not get a standstill in our brains. It is so unbecoming of a person to say she knows many things that others don’t know.
Humility, like patience, is a virtue of a health care provider.
How do you deal with people who assume they know more than you?

my friend, I would accept if she said it in a nice and friendly tone, but she was arrogant in telling me that "Levophed increases the BP"; the other staff nurse simply looked at me when she uttered those words, and when I replied with sarcasm.

@ridingbet Fair enough - it's all in the tone of voice and the manner in which she said it.

I just asked the flow rate of the side drip; I know that Levophed increase the BP. She has attitude problems and she is always talked about by the other staff nurses.

hahaha!
we both belong, my lady. we can be "mataray" when the situation calls for it.The young should consider that we, the "seasoned women" have passed that stage while they are still climbing their way up.

@ridingbet Those are the worst kind. Not only do they think they know more than you, they think they are better than you too.

true. I answered her direct to the point. She has attitude problems because she was taken in by the chief of hospital because she has a very famous backer.

@paigea and this morning when i went on duty, I felt so weak that my legs wiggle, so I asked a student to get my BP; it was 80/50mmHg.

my blood pressure is also at 90/50 and this is normal for me. when my BP reaches 120/89 (the normal BP), I am already hypertensive.

AMI is a threatening heart ailment. The client has ACS r/o AMI, and he is on complete bed rest. He has good prognosis because all medications are available, and besides, he is a good client who listens to the doctors and staff nurses' advice

she managed to say sorry to me when the other staff nurse heard my response; I think if we were alone, she will just turn her back and leave me there.

indeed, because we can and should not stoop down to other person's level. when I replied, that was the end of the conversation between me and her.
