Farewell Innocence?

North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

My senses are failing me. I have become accustomed to the beauty that surrounds me, and barely even notice it any more. The excitement of youth is gone. Nothing surprises me any more. Fear and anxiety are my closest companions. How do I get the innocence back?

It sounds as if you are depressed. I'm hearing of more and more people suffering from this, it seems to be more prevalent nowadays. I hope that you get help if you need it.

You sound like me! I think you are depressed. You need to take some special time to do something you like. Be around some one you enjoy. It's about you and you need to be good to yourself. Try not to stay inside your head thinking on all this fear and anxiety and not appreciating the beauty about you. Get stimulus outside yourself. Movie, library or park might be good. Go for a drive. Somewhere a little different maybe. Get yourself a treat. You deserve it.

@cindiowens ...That is how I am. Always feel better in the spring. I hate to take meds too but when I find one that actually works I stay with it.

Yes, you are right. I need to take my antidepressants, but I hate taking meds. All this cold weather has not helped. I will bounce back in the Spring.

You can still be innocent with all the knowledge you have gained over the years. What you are going through has nothing to do with your having lost your innocence unless you have done something wrong that caused you to lose it. Cheer up and move on.

@cindiowens You must use that knowledge to your advantage rather than feel the way you do.

No, nothing I have done, Just the things I have learned that have made all of the wonder in life disappear it seems.

Possibly some kind of spiritual guidance would help. Or perhaps an antidepressant.

Be brave, be bold, be courageous. Be active, interact with others, join a community, mingle with the poor, reach with the outcasts and you will find meaning in your life. And once more, feel the beauty of life. Love life. Love others.

Sounds great, but social situations terrify me.

@cindiowens you may need a change of environment and change of companions too, retire the duo - fear and anxiety, and embrace trust and confidence - it could make you happier.

Just keep saying that you feel joy until you really do.

I think I need a "joy" mantra or ritual or something.

Looking at things through a child's eyes is about as close a you might get. The things I notice when I'm with my three year old granddaughter.

My children often make me feel good, and they bring back those feelings of wonderment sometimes.

good question. I don't think one can get innocence back. But we can strive for hope I believe; to alleviate the anxiety.

I'm feeling the same way. If you ever figure out how to regain our innocence, please write and let us all know. What's that saying "youth is wasted on the young"? How true is that?
