Terrified of poverty

It is terrible to live in poverty. When you do not know where you will sleep tonight, and when the next meal will come, life is terrible. You are not just exposed to the elements, you are also exposed to all the evilness in the street. Nearly all of us here in Mylot have a home to return to, and we have food in the fridge. We have so much different food to eat that we write so many posts about our breakfast, lunch and dinner. Those of us who had been poor before know the bitterness that comes from the lack of money. We feel powerless because we cannot afford many basic things in life. A shower a day costs money. A bowl of rice costs money. A piece of bread has to last us till dinner. It is terrifying to live a life of poverty. It is always good to have some money in the bank to shield us against poverty.

If things get really bad we could always rob the bank that used to house our savings

If things really get so bad, you will have a major strike in the city!

Pope Francis emphasized 'compassion and mercy for the poor'...we need to help others especially the poor, the needy, the lowly, the neglected ones...that's the essence of Christianity. No longer shall we pray for ourselves alone, better to pray for others, too. We should be the physical arm of God in extending these help to the poor, somehow alleviating their poverty and live a life of dignity.

Yes, the part about letting them live a life of dignity is more important than anything else. If we take away their self-respect, we are literally destroying them.

@scheng1 exactly! we can see poor people digging up the garbage for food, only dogs or pigs do that, but they don't mind as long as they can fill up their stomach and continue to live. Lips service without deeds is nothing. let's do our part, in our own little way.

It would be terrifying to have to live on the streets and not know where your next meal is coming from. One time years ago I applied for food stamps because we had very little in the house to eat. They made me feel like I was depriving someone else of food, the way they talked to me I will never forget and I got up and told them where to go and make a promise to myself that I would never again go back to that place no matter what I had to do to feed my children.

@scheng1 I hope that their attitude has changed and they treat people the way they would want to be treated as they are no better than anyone else except they have a job there making a decent wage.

I do not like the attitude that they have towards people who come to ask for food stamp. It is bad enough to be poor, but to take away the dignity, that is the ultimate insult. They can say something more encouraging, such as encouraging you to help the poor when you are richer.

Long time ago I saw some photos about the poor children in my country and these photos are really upset and I cried. Perhaps when you see it as photos, then you can feel it. When you live well, sometimes you can't imagine that there are some people who can live so differently in the same country. I am sad to sad that today there are more poor families today.

I think the situation in China is worse than other countries. At least in many developed countries, the charities are helping the children, the sick, and the poor. These charities are subjected to audit by the government, and many charities have good governance. Charities in China are unlikely to gain such trust from the people, and I think some of the money goes to corrupted officers instead of the children in need.

You are right, it's so good to have that 'cushion' in the bank.

There are thousands who live in poverty through no fault of their own. Then there are those who live in poverty after being given many opportunities that they have squandered or thrown away. I fell sympathy for the former.

If children are in poverty, then nobody will blame them. if adults are in poverty due to health reason, nobody will blame them too. Other than that, most able-body persons who can learn a skill should not be in such situation. They may be poor, but not to the extent that they do not have a home or food to eat.
