Happy Hour ~~ Two Stories Of Stealing Money Off The Walls

Canada

We love happy hour while on vacation. It's usually mid afternoon, it's usually cheaper for food and drinks, and the clientele are usually just like us...old, retired, and happy. Yesterday we were looking for a dive, a hole in the wall, not pretty but happy and we found a couple. One had a lot of people sitting on the porch, with all the doors open. Because those on the porch were smoking, all that smoke was pouring in with the wind off the gulf. I can't stand cigarette smoke. We won't be going back to that one. The other place was a small dive with a parking lot full of cars. That's a good thing. We went inside, sat at the bar, read the menu, ordered a beer and a wine, got some onion rings that were delicious and home made. Unfortunately they served the wine and beer in plastic cups. I am a wine snob and I want it in a glass. When I looked up I noticed the place was covered in dollar bills, the second place in this town and I left my camera at home. So many of you asked if people stole the money off the walls and ceiling of the bars. While in South Carolina I asked the same question. They said one night a patron broke in and took as much money as he could knowing the place had an alarm. He got away but he was caught and arrested when he tried to use the money at a local gas station. The money was marked, very obviously marked and the guy at the gas station called the cops. The thief admitted he hadn't spent any until that day .....too bad for him. The story from the bar here in Panama City Beach, Florida was a bit different. The thief was "falling down drunk", he broke a window. The window was quite high. The guy who could hardly walk tried to crawl through the window, he didn't get it done, but did manage to cut his hands, his arms, his chest and belly before he fell out and fell asleep on the porch floor. The alarm had worked and the police found him sleeping, got him to a hospital for his cuts and then took him to jail... The bartender at the bar last night was not friendly so I didn't get to ask if they were ever broken into for the money. I love a good story... We might have to go back to find out, if their onion rings were that good, the meals must be too, the place was packed with diners. Do you have a favourite restaurant with a story? Maybe you will write about it.

@PainsOnSlate We had a mini suit in a hotel on the beach. We loved to walk many miles early in the morning.

There is a bar here which is famous for having the walls covered in ties - neckties that is. It is traditional to cut off the end of a visitor's tie and display it on the wall.

I feel like a place decorated like that is just asking for trouble!

You would think they would have to pay more for an alarm company and insurance.

Agreed! There are too many people now days who are hard up and would risk stealing with temptation like that staring at them.

I do not like things happened but as I read it is not pleasant. However, vacation is vacation and you need to keep not rob you. Very bad publicity for this restaurant and this place. But there are such people who are willing to do anything to harm others. Hopefully not again witness such scenes!

The restaurants are lovely and fun but we asked about the money used as decorations, some people, but not most would steal it if they could. We would never do that but enjoy the crazy stories of others who try.

Amusing tales. When you told us about the 'dollar decor' before I thought it was perhaps a one-off, but I see it isn't. The amount of diners in a place is usually a good sign of how good the food is.

We will go back to that place because of the numbers dining, it is a good sign.

I ate in a haunted restaurant in London and near my town up north. No ghosts to be found. I also ate at the oldest restaurant in the world and the oldest in England.

I don't think I have ever eaten anywhere with a really interesting story behind it. Although, perhaps my niece who used to work as a waitress knows some stories she hasn't told.

When I was a student I worked at a golf club. Good money, too many drunks, great staff who walked the female employees to their cars every nigh, and lots of nasty stories about old men chasing young girls...

i have yet to see or heard of bars or restaurants here that use real money to decorate walls. maybe if i put up my own restaurant, i will also try to decorate a certain wall with real money but i will make sure they are marked also so we can catch anyone who tries to rob easily.

We don't usually ever see a happy hour at home, but while traveling we usually go every day, it's a fun way to get to know who lives in the area and what we might miss if we don't talk to the locals. We've never run into a drunk, most people at happy hour are there for the fun, bargains, and to meet people.

It's a little surprising that there have only been those two stories that you heard about. I would think that having money on the walls and ceilings like that would be like inviting a thief to come and try to take it. But maybe there are more security measures there that we don't know about.

I'm sure the ones with money every where and probably all that don't have money hanging. It's just commen sense to protect your business and if broke in, the police arrive and your insurance is good.

It would be interesting to know and hear about what all those bills are doing on the walls and ceiling. I've never heard of such a thing before. Funny that the one that stole money from the one location didn't notice the bills were marked before using them. Had he waited and used them elsewhere, in another city a long distance from there, possibly no one would have known about it.

Very interesting story. And while it's kind of interesting with all the money on the walls and such, why would you want to do that just because it does make you more susceptible to getting robbed.

@fishtiger58 Both bars I spoke to staff said it started with one patron signing a dollar and asking for a stapler..., it's done by the patrons. If it was my place it wouldn'T be all over, it makes me feel the restaurants not clean. We've had a drink at all three places but didn't food. Except for onion rings...We talked about going back to the last place because it was so busy selling food, we figured it must be good..but we will see if we get back there

That sounds delicious. We used to eat at buffets too but there is always too much food and we would eat too much. Now we eat very little in our old age, gotta keep healthy and trim.

That's unusal to have money on the walls. Did they every say why they did that? Like most of us we would worry someone would steal it ect. The only money I ever see on walls is usually the first dollar a business makes and they frame it. The only interesting story I can recall is we were at a restaurant and there was a table of high school ish age girls eating out. I don't remember if there was an adult with or not but the girls did a dine and dash and the server was stunned to find a tip and an unpaid bill. Also another time I remember a server chasing out a door to catch a customer who had not left a tip as to why his service was soo bad that did not leave him a tip. I'm not much of a tipper, and prefer to go to places where I dont have to tip personally.

We're old so we can afford to give a healthy tip for good service. We also have worked in the restaurant business and know important that tip is. The money on the walls and above your head was started by one patron and everyone following did the same...not me, I wouldn't throw money away for that.

I bet only those who have drank till their brains are not working will steal the money. If the bar owner is so stupid as to put up the cash for people to steal easily, he will not be in business for long.

It is the drunks that try to take the money, most people just consider it a decoration and often add a dollar to it for fun.

That sounds interesting, we went to two pubs yesterday, a rainy day and enjoyed both, both unusual and interesting, both what we would call a hole in the wall...
