Water Softener

I would like to know how many of you have a water softener in your home? The reason I'm asking is my water is really hard and the plumber said my pipe problems are because of the hard water. What do you think of this answer? I'm considering buying a water softener, but don't know whether it can fix my plumbing pipe problems.
I would like to know if one brand is better than another and how much is a reasonable price to pay at this time. I'm finding there is a big range of prices and they are available to rent or buy. Is there an advantage to renting vs buying? I know the ads say service calls are free for renting, but how often do they need to be serviced? You can see I'm reading so much information and don't know what is facts and what is just a company trying to get me to spend my hard earned dollars. Any advice would be great.

Here is one more:
SOME FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE BUYING ANY TYPE OF REGENERATIVE WATER SOFTENER Introduction: The facts listed below are ones which many water dealers simply refuse to discuss. It is important you know what water softeners can and cannot do; how they

Wow, I'm surprised water softeners aren't banned in Southern California, as we have a water shortage for many years. Certainly, softened water is bad for my plants and shouldn't be drank to much salt for anyone to consume. I think the only real benefits would be showers, as we have a lot of scale problems in the tub and sounds like my hair would no longer be dull and make me look 10 years plus older. Somebody told me I was 80 yesterday and I'm barely considered a senior. Thanks for the reply and was surprised at the numbers of states that banned water softeners.

@hellopeeps I don't want to shorten my life or other members of my family just worried there will be more over $10,000 bills for plumbing. The pipes were leaking because of rust, so all of the piping had to be replaced. You know your problem is bad when the water company stops at your place because your water usage is to high.

@Fishmomma its just good to know some facts before buying stuff that people tell you to buy. I mean salt is bad for us period and once you put that into your system you cant take it out. Minerals are good. Think about maybe changing your tubing system I dont know look into it more before making any decisions is what I would do because water softeners really knock off your life span

I think in the long run renting will be more expensive than just buying one. Those rent places are in it to make money.

I agree they sure do charge a lot and so far doesn't look like there would be much to fix. Right now, only considering the hot water pipe, as no way is the water we drink being changed. Thanks for the reply.

Here is some good information to read before you make your decision
A water softener may seem like common sense if you have hard water, but softened water can cause several sneaky problems you might not realize.

I can see one way a softener would help and that is to just soften the hot water. I'm not sure if the places in this area just do hot only, so might check into that solution. The people that lived in this house before us had a softener and took it with them. I wish that I had asked them if they used it with just hot.
