Cold Dish for a Hot Weather Day

The weather in Singapore has been REALLY HOT and NASTY lately. Each time I walk outside on the street I'll be sweating like a pig. For the past week, I've been having this local cold dessert every single day to cool down. The name of the dessert is cheng teng (which means clear soup). It has an assortment of ingredients such as barley, red beans, dried logan, water chestnut shavings and sago. The liquid is mainly pandan leaves cooked in brown sugar syrup. Ice shavings are added and served. It's sold at $1.50 a bowl. I'm gonna have it later... Photo: Cheng teng that I can't live without

Interesting. Hope I can try it. In our country we have "halo-halo" shaved ice with milk, young coconut strips, sweet beans, leche flan (custard flan), boiled sweet potato and banana, and topped with ice cream.

I like cold soups in the summer. There is a nice cucumber soup which has a fancy name - vichyssoise - or something like that.

Since I am a Chinese and I am quite familiar with the dessert you attached here. We often have it in summer. It tastes well and it can cool you down. I heard it is also healthy. In fact I like to drink it much more without the beans and other ingredients.

Yeah, you're right it's healthier than drinking soda. Other ingredients they sometimes add are red dates and white fungus. I prefer drinking the liquid over the ingredients too.

Indeed it is, it's mild, fragrant and quenches my thirst in the hot summer.

Looks kind of like any number of Japanese desserts with red bean paste. I am going to eat a hot soup made of red beans (azuki) cooked in sugar and with a boiled chestnut, omly in my case it is to warm up. It can be eaten cold or hot.

I've had various Japanese red bean paste desserts and they are really good! This is different where red beans are not the focus, instead the clear and sweet pandan leaf infused brown sugar broth takes center stage.

@Ladypeace I would love to try that. I like brown sugar flavor. We sometimes use "black sugar" syrup on mochi balls, red beans, and fruit cocktail. But no leaves in that one. I like mochi wrapped in pickled sakura (cherry) leaves or in bamboo leaves (you don't eat the bamboo leaves).

It is a dessert soup? I assume the base is sweet from the brown sugar syrup? I am glad you are able to cool off with it.

It's only sweet but south east asians do make sweets out of conventionally savory ingredients known to the west.

Indeed when the weather is hot desserts like that is a hit . And that is similar to our halo-halo , crushed ice with different pieces of candied fruits such as jackfruit , mango amongst the others , with shreds of cheese and with milk . So yummy and perfect for a hot climate .
