Nightmare to have shoes that give way during a trip

One of the horrors of travelling is to have shoes that give way. You cannot imagine how terrible it is when you are in the third day of the trip, and you have no more shoes to wear. Long ago, a group of us went for a 3 days hike in mountainous region in China. Two persons in the group had the soles of their branded sneakers came off. Nobody in the right mind would bring two pairs of sneakers for a hiking trip. After all, we had to carry our own backpacks which were quite heavy. The villagers in the mountains came to the rescue. They sold us the straw slippers which were perfect for hiking up the mountain. Personally I had the same experience in Europe. My walking shoes gave way, and I had to throw them away. I was fortunate that I had packed in an extra pair of sandals. The pair of sandals was not meant for walking. I meant to use them as slippers in hotel and flight.

That's a good adventure. Despite the worn out pair of shoes, the local people showed their concern.

They are not showing their concern. They see a business opportunity. We do not get the straw shoes free of charge. We just have to pay whatever they ask.

@Shavkat They sure gain from our presence. That part is not a tourist destination. We have to stay in cabins, and order food and drinks from the locals.

@scheng1 In that case, let us be glad that you had helped them out in financial per se. I do think it is a part of having tourists in certain places to have the inflow of extra income for the local people. In some point, if they don't have the things you needed, then it would be difficult to walk without the indigenous slippers. It can also be a souvenir from them, too.

Shoes are so heavy in luggage but it can be a nuisance if they wear out while you're away.

Yes, that is the thing! Most of us are smart enough not to bring new shoes that have yet to break in. If we bring along a good pair of walking shoes, we do not expect them to give way halfway through the trip.

@scheng1 I think choosing shoes to take on holiday is the worst bit. I needed shoes for walking, for a wedding(!), for going out for a meal perhaps. I bought Crocs while I was away for wearing in the shower at camping places.

Another good reason why we should buy especially gear that's branded from a good and reputable store ( with all the fakes and crap around). My Oakley tactical half boots is very reliable when I go to expeditions similar to yours, I also have another U.S, made, forgot the brand that I use sparingly for more than 20 years and i never had any problems. I think it would also be wise to include mending kits in you back pack like glue, threads and needles it won't take much space.

Agree. That time we were very young and foolish. We knew about breaking in new shoes, but we did not take note of the terrain in the mountainous region in China. It was a good lesson learnt.

@scheng1 and i bet they sold you the slippers at a black market price but to be fair maybe that is what they use for centuries. I went mountain climbing when i was younger and I found it more comfortable to go up barefoot when it rained so hard and our heavy boots got stuck in the mud.

I would never trek in sneakers.

That time we were young, and dumb! We did not know about the terrain, and a hike in the mountain sounded very romantic and cool!

I swear it's damn tough to handle things when you loose your shoes anyhow during hiking.Thankfully you had sandals else you would be having a lot of difficulties.

Yes, that is a blessing, thought the villagers sold the straw sandals to us for a very high price.

I can't even imagine slippers made out of straw. Can't be very comfortable.
