Speaking of Babies

I was having fun with my grand children one day and we were talking about animal babies and what they were called. So, we took some time to look some of them up. I thought I would share what we found with you. Baby skunks are called kits. Baby koalas, wombats and kangaroos are called joeys. Baby platypus are called puggles. They thought that one was quite funny. Baby frogs are called polliwogs. They liked that one too. Baby swans are called cygnets. We found several more. It's fun to learn what the babies are called. Have you ever done this with your children?

We learnt many of these in school for some reason - also masculine and feminine names for things - stag/hind, buck/doe, rajah/ranee. I used to love those lessons.

Yes, the masculine and feminine names for the animals is interesting to learn also. We'll have to tackle those next time and see how many they can remember.

Very interesting, I know most of them, except the platypus.

Most people don't know about the platypus. I just think it's interesting to learn about the babies. I follow a "baby animals" site on Instagram and they show pictures of the cutest little babies. They have a little baby monkey on there that is sucking its thumb. So cute. Every morning, while drinking my coffee, I love to look at the baby animals. I'm so glad I found that site. They are so adorable. It just makes me day get off to a good start.

Most people know the "common" ones, but I am just learning with my grandchildren some of the "not so common" animal babies. It's been fun.

I'm always trying to add new words to my English vocabulary and I also like to add words from other languages too.
