Red kites courting

As we walked across the playing field this morning I could hear the distinctive whistling call of a red kite. They make a rather peculiar sound, a high whistling noise a bit like ‘Whheeeeoooh wheeoooh wheeoooh'. They do it when perched in a tree and also while flying. After a while I heard another bird answering from the other side of the valley. I don’t know whether males and females both make the same sound but I would guess they do. It’s amazing that these birds were on the verge of extinction about 20 years ago and now they are so common, I see them most days. I still love to watch them though, and today I managed to get a reasonable photo with my little pocket camera. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2016.

Remarkable and wonderful how the birds have come back from the brink of extinction. Every mating cry you hear is a victory cry for the species.

It is an amazing story, I hope we can do the same for some other species in danger.

I don't think I've ever seen one. I do know that until a couple of years ago I had no idea about these birds; I got very confused when a chap at work was excitedly talking about the red kites he'd seen in the sky

For a long time they were very rare, only to be seen in an obscure corner of Wales. After a program of reintroduction they are almost as common as pigeons round here!

Well done for getting that shot, it's great. I don't think I've ever seen one.

That is wonderful if they have come back from being close to extinction. Some bird species have recovered which is a great thing.
