A Ship Anchor In Salford Quays

I love the docklands areas around Salford Quays where the Irwell River, Bridgewater Canal and the mighty Manchester Ship Canal meet. Not only do we have the Media City as the new home of the BBC and Commercial TV here, but also our Lowry Centre art gallery / Theatre and the North's Imperial War Museum. Along the waterfront with its many bars and cafes there is a great deal of art and sculpture and relics of the golden years of the shipping industry that helped define the twin cities of Manchester and Salford. Among the artefacts is this giant ship’s anchor, which gives a sense of how big and strong and heavy they had to be to hold a ship fast against the raging seas. The sense of the chains and winches raising and lowering this heap of iron is staggering. Arthur Chappell

Sounds very interesting. I live so far away from anything sea worthy or anything. I have often wanted to visit the Naval station where my dad was stationed which is Bremerton, Washington. But have not as yet.

the ship canal turned Manchester and Salford into a port even though we are over 60 miles from the sea

Living in a shipping town, we have an appreciation of the size of the ropes, cables, chains and anchors. At the moment we have six ships over wintering along the canal. They remove the ballast so they are sitting high in the water and look like huge walls.

I haven't been to Salford since one of my schoolfriends went to university there, I think that was not long after all that area had been 'rejuvenated'.
