Holy Acid Reflux!

I have been on omeprazole for nearly 4 months now. My doctor prescribed it to me to treat my acid reflux. I didn't realize that I was having it so badly until I was diagnosed with a slight hiatal hernia.
My concern now is the risk of bone fracture of the spine, hip, or wrist This occurred in people over 50, or who have taken the medication for a long period of time.
So, I am trying to ween myself off this medication. Not an easy task when I am one that consumes way too much coffee, enjoys foods that are high in acidity, and the occasional slice of bacon or three.
Today was my second day off the medication. I did have to take one tonight because I was experiencing some acid reflux after having one of the brownies I baked last night and of course my second medium sized coffee of the day.
Hopefully soon I can stop the medicine entirely. I do worry about fracture as I am in that wonderful group of people 50 and over.

It is so hard to get away from the foods we so love, even if it is harming us! I have mild cases of acid reflux from time to time, but it's been awhile since I've had any problems. Is there any alternatives to your favorite foods that would be easier on you?
Or is there an alternative medicine you can try?

I have read that I need to stay away from chocolate, acidic foods, and coffee. I have grown quite dependant on my daily coffee fix. There was a time when I loved a cup of hot tea with milk. I still enjoy it now and again, guess I will have to switch to tea.

@ElusiveButterfly Earl grey tea made to the right strength with milk and sugar tastes a lot like coffee with cream.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I do not care for sweetened tea. I prefer it with just milk.

well, I would talk to the dr on this, and see if there are supplements to help with bone health

I eat healthy foods that are high in calcium. But, I so worry about the side effects of the medication. I also know that I cannot go off it as easily as I thought.

@Jessicalynnt yes, that is what my pcp said as well. Damned if we do and damned if we don't.

@ElusiveButterfly acid reflux can cause it's own damage to the body if unchecked as well.

I was on Prevacid for awhile but it stopped working (or my AR got worse) and the doctor changed me to Nexium. I told her it wasn't helping so I have to take two doses a day. I'm fine with that. However, occasionally I forget to take my morning medicine. By evening I am feeling terrible heartburn. I decide it's time to take my second dose. That's when I realize I didn't take the first one. I can't live without it... and I don't eat spicy or acidic foods. During the day I eat very little so feeling pretty sick after having eaten nothing goes to show that I need the medication.

@ElusiveButterfly I am a little concerned about being on medication indefinitely but it's better than the alternative.

In another discussion about coconut water, it was suggested that I try it for my acid reflux. He said it calms an upset stomach. I am willing to try most anything at this point.
I suffered last night from having that second cup of coffee.

@JudyEv I couldn't bring myself to purchase a powdered form as it was a bit expensive. Have to head out at some point to finish my grocery shopping and will look for it when I am out.

@ElusiveButterfly I've only tasted coconut water once and didn't like it much. But if it does the trick you could put up with the taste.
