Don't register women, eliminate

About a week ago, there was an article in the paper. It said that two of the top generals in the US wanted to extend selective service registration to women. Right now, men between the ages of 18 and 26 are required to register. If they don't, first of all it's a felony, and second they are ineligible for federal financial and job aid. Now there is no military draft in this country since the 1970's, but if it is ever reinstated, the selective service registration is what would be used to select people to be drafted. A lot of people jumped on the bandwagon to say that if men have to register, it is only fair that women should have to also. If we want gender equality, we should have it here too. Then, two days ago, I read an excellent article in Counterpunch that said "wait". Why are we all jumping on this one like it's a good thing. Why not instead call to abolish registration for everybody, and especially why are "personal freedom" advocates not calling for this? After all, if we do reinstate the draft, it's essentially a form of slavery. Temporary, true, but it is involuntary, right? You face legal penalties, even imprisonment, if you are drafted and fail to show up. You are deprived of your liberty, and possibly even your health or your life. Also, it seems we are doing pretty well with our all volunteer military. What do you think?

I haven't heard of anyone I know registering. I think that women should have the opportunity.

I think the Draft is wrong. Like you say above it is a form of slavery. And I don't think women should be drafted. Call me old fashioned but women should not go to war. I know they have women in the IDF over in Israel and it is mandatory that they serve a certain amount of time, but I just don't think women should be forced into it here.

Even if they're forced to register, they may never reinstate the actual draft, but on the other hand, why even have a registration at all then?

I have a general take - wars benefit the 1% who become richer and politicians are manipulated into them. We should make the UN functional to avoid wars - it is possible if big powers unite against a common enemy - siva

I don't think the elites will allow that, but I agree.

I agree the register should be abolished in peace time. When did they make it legally mandatory? I never had to when I came of age in the late 1970s. You call the draft slavery but what's to be done in time of war? We had to raise an army for World War II.

It's been mandatory quite a long time, but it's generally not enforced. If you try and apply for Federal assistance for college, you will see FAFSA screens require it for males.
