This was another one of my “pep” talks that I gave to my sales TEAM. So many persons that I have met in the jewelry sales business, really wanted to be good at sales and make extra money, but they doubted their own abilities to do so.
Believe me, I understand that, because I doubted myself when I first began in sales. However, I realized that if I wanted to be successful and I REALLY wanted to be, because we needed the extra income and with four teenagers and a new baby, I knew that I would HAVE TO find something I could do PART TIME and not a full time job where I would have to leave my baby with strangers.
So, what’s the first thing I had to do? Build my confidence in myself and be self-motivated, because as an Independent Contractor, I didn’t have a BOSS and I didn’t have to report to anyone nor did I have to punch a time clock.
I soon realized that I had to DO IT MYSELF. I had to MAKE my self spend the time that it took to learn my trade. So while the baby napped and the kids were in school, I perfected my presentation and learned my product and read up on sales techniques. And I practiced my presentation and learned from my own mistakes, but I also listened to others who were successful, when I heard what they had to say at the sales meetings. I took every training class that was available.
I developed FAITH in my ability to SELL and my DOUBTS disappeared when the paychecks started rolling in.
A career in Sales is not the easiest thing to do. It takes work to learn what to do and what NOT to do, what to say and what NOT to say. But, believe me, I think that anyone can do it, if they REALLY want to do it, and I believe that because I DID it.
My family and friends never thought that I had what it takes, because I was rather shy and backward, but I left that person behind, when I made up my mind to be successful.
I became one of the TOP sales persons in the company and I’m proud of that, but my message here is not about ME, it’s about anyone who wants a better income, a better life, a better job.
Don’t think you can’t attain that if you REALLY want it. YOU CAN.
Whether or not you want a career in sales or any other career, you can improve on what you have now. You can rise to the top of your field. It mostly depends on you.

That is the way to do it for sure. If someone wants something that bad, they need to put themselves into it 100 percent. And like you, learn everything about it. Things will come easier over time. Like anything else. I know sales is not an easy career. Never was and probably never will be. As a consumer, I have dealt with many salespeople and some were just very overbearing. Others were more considerate and understanding. Those are the ones I will mostly deal with. They will take their time with the customer.

I was NEVER a pushy sales person. I always had the customer's needs and wants in mind. Jewelry is not a necessary item. It's a luxury, but women like jewelry and have lots of choices. I had to show them that our jewelry was a good investment, because it was high quality and carried a lifetime guarantee. Sure, you could purchase cheaper jewelry but it didn't come with a guarantee and our company stood behind their guarantee.

@IreneVincent See, I think you are one of those sales people that understand and will take the time out for a customer. Also you will not lie about a product. We need more people like you around.

@inertia4 I wouldn't BUY from a "pushy" sales person , so I certainly didn't want to BE a "pushy" sales person.
Thanks for the compliment.

I got motivated when I needed to make extra income for my family. Otherwise, I would not have tried so hard. Now I'm retired and I have what I need to live a comfortable life. My kids are grown and on their own, but I feel that I did my part when it needed to be done.

@JudyEv I understand what you mean. I'm not the go-getter that I used to be when it was necessary. I have more time to get things done, so I can procrastinate on chores and errands and curl up with a good book myself.

@IreneVincent I worked for many years too and it was never difficult to get up and go to work. But like you, I'm now retired and it can be harder to get motivated. Cleaning out a cupboard isn't nearly as much fun as reading a book!
