An Injury Saved a Life

I was at the University of Florida women's gymnastics meet tonight, and during one of the floor routines a gymnast from Arkansas landed wrong and hurt her leg. She had to be carried off the mats and into the locker room for treatment.
It reminded me of a similar incident about a year ago, when another college team was in town for a meet against the Gators. During the floor routine, the gymnast from the other team did a series of flips and tumbles, but fell flat on her face on her last flip, causing a potential spinal injury. She was held motionless on the floor until the paramedics could stabilize her and backboard her for a trip to the emergency room. Everyone in the audience, including all the gymnasts and coaches on the floor, were completely devastated by the girl's injury.
However, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. While she was in the hospital getting x-rays, CAT scans and MRI's to determine the extent and nature of her injuries, doctors discovered that the athlete had a brain tumor. They were able to catch it early enough to treat, and that gymnast is now well on her way to recovery and remission. Had she not sustained a serious injury during the gymnastics meet last year, her condition might not have been diagnosed until it was too late.
Isn't it amazing how sometimes we have to go through hell to get to heaven? I'm just so happy to hear that former gymnast is now doing well and getting on with her life!

Thank God someone is looking after each of us, because we certainly do not do a good job of looking after ourselves!

Most definitely! I'm a big believer in that! Call it fate, divine intervention, the hand of God, luck, or whatever, but no matter how you look at it, it happened for a reason!

yes that really did save her life. I had a groin musclepull tjat sent me to er there they saw my heart beats were half as fast as they should be. so I was hospitalized and each day they took one of the three high blood presre meds off my pill routine til they found the one that slowed my heart beat down way too much . so the groin pull save my life too as I could not go on long on that slow a heart beat.

Wow, that's great news that they discovered your slow heart beat and were able to pinpoint what was causing it!

that's sort of what happened to my mom. she had an x-ray (i think) because she was preparing for hip surgery & they spotted kidney cancer.

I agree. I think God had a hand in it, but I didn't mention that in the post because I didn't want the discussion to turn into a religious debate. Either way, that girl got diagnosed in time and was able to receive the life-saving treatment she needed.

I agree. I'm sure that poor girl was traumatized by her injury when it happened, but I bet she looks back now and is thankful she suffered that injury.

@moffittjc true. An injury made way to discovering a more serious condition.
