Pet Peeve-Irresponsible Dog Owners

No, I'm not talking about the ones that mistreat their pets. I am talking about the ones who let their dogs loose without a leash to roam the neighborhood. The dogs get into things, poop in other peoples yards, nip at heels of people while their walking and often almost get hit by cars. Sure, pup needs his exercise but that's what you have a leash for to take the dog for walks. Having a dog on a leash is not mean, it is a way to protect the dog. To keep him out of trouble and danger. I don't care what all the memes say, it isn't cruel to chain a dog as long as he is being well cared for. If an owner can't be responsible for their dog they shouldn't have one.

I agree with you. I dislike people who do not keep their dogs under control. Puppies need training and once they are trained they are usually quite obedient. It is the irresponsible owners who cause havoc by not keeping their dogs under control.

@irishidid Some people always seem to blame others and not themselves.

It isn't until the dog is either hit and kill or bites someone, then the owner wants to blame everyone but themselves.

I agree if they can't take care of their animal then they shouldn't have. A dog running loose is the owner's fault and they should be fined for that.

@irishidid I agree fined so much that they will think twice about doing it again.

We worked on the dogs to stay on the property and for the most part they would. At times they would run off, but we'd get them and bring them back. For pure running we have wide open spaces to take the dogs and they know this. Only one dog left now, but he was out running the fields today. It was really pretty out too, all the snow was sparkling like rainbow-colored diamonds.

I agree @irishidid . Because I have a large property (16 1/2 acres), all 3 of my dogs were on tie-outs. They had 40 feet of running room, plus their dog houses. In my neighborhood, dogs run loose all the time and it ticks me off. Just this morning there were 5 loose dogs on the road.

It's almost always dogs running loose that get hit by vehicles. And when that happens, it's the dog's owner's fault, not the driver's.

Agreed and you would think the owner wouldn't want their pet in danger but they still let them run loose.

Well stated. I agree 100 percent. I dislike dogs for so many reasons but agree irresponsible owners are the most responsible for the wrath of people like myself against dogs. I observe that most dog owners should not have dogs not only for annoying neighbors but for lousy treatment of their dogs. What kind of dog lover leaves their pooch alone all day in a small apartment while at work?

If you don't have the room or time, don't have the dog. I like dogs in general but not when their owners don't care enough about them to train the dogs.

@irishidid I agree totally. So much of a dog's bad behavior is a reflection of their owner. I hate dogs but can feel sympathy for how they are treated.

It's illegal here to not have a dog on a leash when it's out and about - unless it's a dog park, etc. It can go free in a fenced yard. Farmers often have their dogs running free but they're usually the only ones affected by whatever the dog does.

Then I'd be getting into trouble a lot there because I'd have my dog on a leash when I took it for walks. For its and others safety.

@JudyEv Oh okay, that's different. Yeah farm dogs run free here too. Of course there's no neighborhood for them to get in trouble in.

@irishidid Maybe I didn't make myself clear. Farmers' dogs only run free on the farm, not elsewhere. Everyone is expected to have their dog on a leash in public.
