I Was Discouraged

Shopping today at Wal-Mart I found something that was a bit discouraging. I've been looking online for a while now at PC Tower prices, and we went into the electronic department, we always do, he's a gamer after all. He doesn't buy games from Wal-Mart, but he does like to see what's available. While we were there we checked out computers. I found a Dell Inspirion All in One for the same price as I saw online for the tower alone. Now am I supposed to be happy about that? Not! I would think the price of a tower would be less than getting the entire computer package, but it didn't seem so. So now what do I do? Buy a whole computer package when I only need a tower, or hope I can find a tower for a lot less than the entire computer would be? Those of you who are familiar with electronics and computers in particular, please tell me your thoughts regarding these prices I'm seeing. Thanks for reading.

Walmart can often offer things lower, due to deals and what not, I'd get whatever I needed at the best price, once I had the money, no matter what extra it came with.

@just4him when we got my computer, it came with a printer that we did not need. We stored it in the closet. Eventually we did need. So sometimes extra things aren't necessarily bad you can store them for when something else breaks.

@Jessicalynnt True, and I might need to do that.

I might need to, though that doesn't sound practical.

I would get the whole computer. If you have an old monitor, old keyboard and an old mouse, sooner or later they will break and you will pay more to buy them separately.

@just4him This is true a package is always financially more interesting. If you check every component that goes into a tower (motherboard, memories, HD and so on), it much more expensive to build one your own than to buy a ready one.

@LadyDuck I'm not planning on building one, buying it complete - the tower that is.

You can easily get all those items separately. It's getting the tower that is proving almost impossible, at least financially. It seems the package costs less than buying separate.

If you can't fine a tower with a price lower than the entire package then you have no choice.

Actually I do. If the prices are the same, I would just get the tower.

I think that the package will most likely be the better deal.

I have a great monitor - 25" that I love and the only thing left of the computer that fried six years ago. So I really don't need a monitor. I also have several keyboards and mice running around here, so don't need any of those. What I need is a tower.

Thanks Patsie. I'm not doing laptops anymore. Once I settle on the tower, this laptop will be shelved for good.

Have you thought about checking Amazon for the part(s) you needed? If you wind up having to get it from Walmart, at least you'll have those extra parts when/if you need them.

@just4him I'm a few days late on responding back - have you been able to find what you needed? I wouldn't want a used computer either.

I've looked at Amazon and so far from what I've seen, they are Win 7 or 8.1 nothing new, though they say new. One thing I've determined is this time I'm getting a new PC, not used, or as my son says, someone else's headache. This will be my fourth computer in 8 years. It's time for a new one. And hopefully a brand I can trust as the one I got shortly after I moved into my home was brand new, an HP Lemon right out of the box. Motherboard fried w/i two years. It's time for a Dell.

The difference in the price is probably due to the components that are in each machine. The tower probably has better hardware. I'd suspect that the all-in-one has an "integrated" video card, which means that it's built into the motherboard. With the tower, you'd probably be getting a separate graphics card installed in it. I'd expect that it has more RAM and maybe a faster processor than the all-in-one, too. What sort of price range are you hoping to buy within? I might be able to offer a few suggestions for you if you'd like.

I'm doing my best to stay under $500. I've seen those on sale for half that, which was encouraging and I was ready to buy it, but it went up in price again. I'm also looking at a Dell. I'm not ever buying another HP. I've had three crash on me and one was brand new.

I got just the tower a few years ago at Best Buy. They have good deals.

That's where I've been looking. I'm hoping they come back down in price. The one I saw a couple days ago the All in One, cost the same as the tower I was looking at.

Never with a laptop my friend. I'm getting away from this one as fast as I can. I'm getting a PC tower if possible or the entire computer if I must.

Sometimes you can get really good deals online at best buy, two of my sons bought comps there. Did not care much for their warranty though

Have you shopped around to other computer stores for computer tower prices, if it's on sale or not? I think you're right. You need the tower and not the whole package.

I still need to wait. Hopefully I'll have enough saved for it next month, but I only need a tower.

I'm really ignorant about computers, but if you can't find a tower for a lot less than the whole package, it seems you might as well have the package.

It seems to be the consensus to get the whole package. I just don't know where I would put the extra parts I don't need.

I don't think I could bring myself to buy just the tower if I knew I could get the whole computer for the same price. Maybe I could give the parts I didn't need to a worthy cause.
