"Bloody" Mary Tudor's Birthday

Mary Tudor was born on this day in 1516. That was 500 years ago today! She was born in Greenwich, London and baptised three days later at the Church of Observant Friars. She would become queen of England and overthrow the Protestant Faith, restoring Roman Catholicism as the faith. She ordered the killing of Many Protestants, this act would later (after death) give her the nickname "Bloody Mary." She was the first woman to claim the throne, though her cousin Jane Grey did hold it for a short time after Edward VI death. Elizabeth (Mary's sister) is actually one of my favorite Tudor's.

Well thanks for the update on the history of "Bloody Mary". It is still a scary game played by kids these days. Hey @VivaLaDani, here read about Bloody Mary. Thanks again @ScribbledadNauseam

I used to play it but I don't think my niece and nephew have been taught it. I guess mainly because my nephew would taunt my niece with it all the time.

@Daljinder I was the youngest of three kids, plus we had cousins. It was a constant taunt to do "bloody mary" in the mirror.

The ordering of people to be killed seemed to be in the 'job description' of many of our monarchs!

It was standard back in the old days, which is why only the strong rulers enjoyed a decent span of reign.

No wonder many scary urban legends were attached to her name including a very popular drink.

I love this period if our history. There has been much made of it, particularly about Henry VIII, who was Mary's father. He was so desperate for a son and heir, that he repeatedly got rid of his wives, as he blamed them for only producing girls. There is a great TV series you should watch, if you haven't already, called The Tudors. I think Natalie Dormer is excellent in the part of Anne Boleyn.

@ScribbledAdNauseum The Tudors was a BBC drama. Check it out on IMDb and if you can watch it, do, as it's excellent. It's a bit raunchy in places, particularly involving Anne Boleyn. It's not the reason I watched it, but it didn't put me off it either. Know what I am saying.

@Orson_Kart I'll see if I can find it somewhere. BBC dramas are sometimes picked up with PBS here in the US and put on streaming services.

I think a lot of people have interest in the Tudor Dynasty. I watched a documentary on youtube that theorized what all was wrong with poor Henry. "The Tudors" that was made for HBO? A drama?

I've never had one in years, but as you say, it's a tasty drink and could be addictive.

No, the one you are thinking about is this one : This Mary was believed to have plotted against Queen Elizabeth (Mary Tudor's Sister). I honesty can't remember all of the details on that, but she was beheaded.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes, I'm watching the series Reign on Netflix about her life. Somehow I thought they were the same person.
