Fine dining in the California foothills!

In several posts, I've mentioned miner's lettuce as something you can eat while hiking. It comes out in the early Spring, and is gone by the hot dry months of Summer. We have a lot of it in the foothills of Mt. Diablo, where I often take the kids hiking. I realized I didn't have a good photograph of miner's lettuce in the wild, so I took one the other day. Here's a little field by side of the trail that was full of miner's lettuce. We gobbled up a bunch, and then discussed what we would have had with it had we been Indians a few hundred years ago. (Man cannot live by miner's lettuce alone, we decided.)

We've joked about that! One of our goals is to harvest enough for a real salad and bring it home "to mom."

I remember roaming the countryside when I was a child, scavenging for eatables. We found quite a lot.

@TheHorse Yes - blackberries, but also wild strawberries, watercress from the brook, sweet chestnuts, and even corn from the stalks when it was ripe.

What were some of your favorites? We do have lots of yummy blackberries here. But, like the miner's lettuce, they're seasonal.

@jaboUK my husband too. Mostly berries though and this area isn't the same as the area he grew up.

Ah, where were you at the time? I'm told this grows in many mountainous areas of California. I didn't see any in Marin when I hiked there the other day, but it's all over the foothills of Mt. Diablo, here in the East Bay.

Very interesting photo. I agree, man cannot live on miner's lettuce alone.

@just4him A little sparkling water, with a hint of grape juice, would work just fine.

That certainly looks good enough to eat. I sometimes come across a lush patch of clover and wish I were a cow.

I bought a book to learn what I can eat from the land but have never been brave enough to try anything just from using the book to identify the plants. My husband does eat rose petals so I tried them, (Alberta's wild rose). My great nephew thought that was pretty cool when I showed him.

I'm going to try and earn about other edibles up there. The Indians ate acorns, but they prepared them in a special way. I gather that they contain toxins if you don't prepare them right. I'll have to read up on that.

I can't tell from the photo but it looks like these have a dip to them - do you think they would collect rain water? They look like they would but you'd need a ton of them to tip them into a glass or cup.

Good observation. Maybe that helps them collect light rain. Oh, I see! Yeah. I doubt they collect enough water for humans to harvest water from them--except my eating them.

There are actually tiny little flowers in the middle. It's a very "Springy" looking plant. To me it tastes Springy too.

It's fun knowing you can munch miner's lettuce. Like most lettuce, it's mostly water, so you'd have to eat a lot if it were the only thing available.

I like finding fresh berries and eating them fresh off a tree. I like any fresh fruit there is something about picking it yourself that makes it that much more special for me no middle man I know what I am getting.
