Adventures with Panhandlers

Because I'm a downtown sort of guy, I get hit up by panhandlers all the time. Usually, they either want money or cigarettes, although sometimes, they actually ask for pot.
One night, I was eating and getting loaded at a Downtown Colorado Springs bar. I went outside to smoke on the patio, when I was approached by a fellow who was walking by. He struck up a conversation, during which he found out that I'm a veteran. Suddenly, so was he. (But knew absolutely nothing about the military.)
Eventually, he asked me for ten bucks. Not spare change, not a dollar, but ten dollars. I don't give to panhandlers, no matter how much they ask for, so I wished him good luck and went to drink some more.
On the way back to my place, I encountered a homeless guy pushing his bike, loaded with all of his possessions, up the sidewalk, minding his business, not begging for money at all. I gave him a buck.
A few of my friend's were, in no certain terms, against my generosity.
"He's just going to spend it on booze," they said.
Well, yeah, I hoped he would buy food with it, but if not, I WANTED him to buy alcohol. That has to be a tough life, and if it were me, I'd want some booze once in awhile too.
Was I wrong?
Do you ever give to panhandlers? Even if they don't
ask? What about street musicians, who are usually very talented and at least trying to earn their money?
I'm just curious, is all.

Back in the 90's, a Denver news reporter followed some home. They lived in nicer places than I do.

@teamfreak16 I didn't need to hear that - spoiling my faith in human nature!

I don't go to downtown very often but there are a lot of homeless there. I try not to judge. Anyway, just in my area there are some panhandlers here and there just within my community. One time, one walked up to me in the grocery parking lot asking me for $5 bucks. Seriously? Not spare chain straight up $5 bucks. I was like no, and quickly went in my car and left. He has got the nerve to ask a "student" (at the time) that was literally half an hour of me working. I do give money sometimes but only to ones I feel that are deserving or if I have spare change, etc.

@teamfreak16 That is really sweet of your friend to buy dinner and bring it out to the guy.
I gave food a few times. It's the thought that counts - but ones that demand money, no thank you.

I never give to panhandlers. For one thing, many of them are organized "pros" who are faking it. If you give to a beggar, you are enabling them to continue their lifestyle and many a genuine homeless or beggar do like this as a lifestyle believe it or not.

Oh, I agree. I worked at a homeless shelter in Wyoming a few years ago. A lot of those guys were professional homeless, and showed no indication that they wanted to change their situation.
