Bats In The Belfry and Squirrels In The Attic

I have written before about having mice in the attic. It happens every year. How they get there is a mystery but when we hear their little feet running around we go buy poison and put it in the attic and that takes care of that.
Since we don't have a Belfry we don't have Bats. I bought a Bat House for the back yard and no one ever moved in...sigh...
When we got back from Florida we heard thundering heavy feet (as compared to mice feet) and thought for a day we had Raccoons in the attic. Oh joy!
A neighbor is a “Critter Remover Guy” so we ask him to help us. He came over saying it must be mice and we said - no - bigger than a mouse and he admitted on day two that is was Squirrels.
The first day we called him it was snowing and sleeting so he didn't go on the roof. The second, with ice gone and snow about gone he walked around the roof and found the place they were getting in.
He put a trap door in the spot they used so they can get out but can't get back in. We are now waiting for squirrels to leave and not come back.
We asked about poison and he said NO. Mice die and dry up, Squirrels die and rot for a long time – something we wouldn't want in our attic.
Our neighbor said if they don't go out on their own he would trap them and get them out. That will be this coming week if we still hear them. Fingers crossed they go on their own and stay away.
Have you had critters wanting to share your space?

If he is able to plug the hole that they have, once they are gone, ask him about the little plug ins that you can get. We had a mouse in the house once and after it was gone, my husband bought some of these little things. They emit a noise that pets or humans cannot hear but rodents can and they don't like it. We have one on each level of the house and two out in our attached garage-just to keep them away. They won't get rid of any rodents, but will make your home seem less welcoming to them in the future.

@PainsOnSlate We bought ours at Canadian Tire, they had a 2-pack. And after a few months, you won't even notice them. We saw that our son had one on Saturday when we were there.

When we bought this house we had squirrels in our attic. And man they were loud, especially at night, I think they were fighting. We set live traps and caught them all and took them to the woods down the street and safely released them.

@fishtiger58 I haven't seen how or where they got in but the critter guy did and put the trap[ door where they got in. I hope they will never get back in.

@PainsOnSlate Apparently this house was empty for some time. The squirrels chewed though the roof and took up residence. We patched it and soon saw evidence of them trying to chew through again same spot. We had to put up sheet metal to keep those suckers out.

I have never had any problem with squirrels and know nothing about what to do to be rid of them so if I ever have a problem like this I will know what to do. Yes cats are good mouse catchers.

According to the man who is helping us, the only way to stop the squirrels is to find how they get in and once gone make sure the hole or entry is covered. We did that - they can get out but can't get back in . We think it worked. We used to always have cats but not any more. Cats are the best mousers.

We've never had squirrels in our attic, but we did have rats in the attic of the house we inherited from my in-laws. When we would be there doing work getting it ready for renting out, I could hear something up there. Our handyman said it wasn't anything, but it was. He finally did find them and get rid of them. It's a pain having these unwanted "guests."

Unwanted is right. they are very annoying and I'm afraid they will be chewing on electric lines...

@PainsOnSlate I'm afraid they would suffer from natural consequences for that.

We don't have cats. I think they might deter any critter from moving in.

I cannot ever recall any critters in any place I lived.
Except for mice now and again in one place where we lived near the beach.
I got those sticky sets and those worked.
Did not want to put poison as they then die and the place smells so bad.
Nice photo.

@PainsOnSlate yeah ... some things I can live without.... and spiders is one of them.... which fortunately we do not see many where we live at the moment.... mosquitoes are sometimes a problem a little later in the year.... being so close to the water... but other than that.... bug free....

Oh yeah @PainsOnSlate . Because the belly of the mobile home is just stuffing and plastic, I get: raccoon's, opossum's, mice; you name it. Not much I can do about it either.

Oh wow you have your own zoo. To get rid of the raccoons at another house we put a radio in the attic, they prefer quiet so it kept them at bay but we did have to eventually trap them and make them go away.

That is a bit creepy
. We probably have a lizard or two as well but we can't hear them and the attic is a crawl space, not a space we can get to easily.

We have mice every now and again but when that happens we use poison in the attic and they go away. (we don't have cats so we don't worry about the poison hurting cats.)

My mum often gets rats in her attic. The landlord won't trim the tree they are using to get onto the roof and there is a convenient hole that they squeeze through. Costing the landlord a heap of money for exterminators, but he still won't just trim the tree!

We don't have rats but squirrels are rats to me. And you are right, the trees are how they get to the roof. So far after have the roof fixed we haven't heard any noises up there...
