Meet-Up Groups

Recently I have joined a lot of different Meet-up groups in my area. Now that I have a good amount of time to do what I want, I'm exploring different meet up groups in order to interact socially. I love being at home, my own company is wonderful. I have many interests and much to do, but I tend to isolate myself because I'm so happy with all I do at home. Hence, the meet-ups! Meet up dot com lists all the available groups in a local area. Probably in days of yore they would be called clubs. I chose several meet up groups. One where they gather to watch a movie several times a month and then eat together afterwards and discuss the movie. This past Sunday we saw The Lady in the Van with Maggie Smith. Fabulous movie! Then we had dinner at Chili's. It's more fun than going to a movie alone, but I still go alone often, just because I love to see a good movie in the theater. Another meet up I joined is a game group. They meet twice a month at a restaurant (in the party room) and have dinner together and play games until midnight. You can come anytime during those hours and leave anytime or be there for the whole event. They play board games in small groups and it's quite fun. The first time I had to leave early, but I usually stay for the whole evening because I love to play board games and no one in my family here in Florida likes games at all. In Ohio my kids and friends had game nights often and I really miss that. A third group I joined has a monthly dinner at a local restaurant and during the months meet together to attend local events such as festivals, flower shows, corn mazes, horseback riding, etc. They also do a weekly hike. Most of the group are singles who have become friends. I have only done the dinners so far but I'm looking forward to an event in March that I signed up for. I'm new in this group. About ten years ago I joined my first meet-up group in Dayton Ohio. It was a knitters group and they said they would teach anyone to knit, so I showed up with yarn and needles and by golly they did teach me. I became a knitting fiend and attended the weekly group faithfully for three or four years until we moved. I still attend when I visit Dayton. Check them out. It's a great opportunity and you can sort them out by your own personal interests. You'll be surprised at how many you have near you.

@Jeanniemaries That's good. As much as I go out, and that really isn't much, I prefer here as well.

I'm so comfortable with my life, my goal is to be more hospitable to others here at home.

Its great to know that these clubs exist, but while I'm still working I just cannot afford the time. But hopefully, one day, when I'm retired, maybe....

@Jeanniemaries We have a pretty selectively small social life currently. We have our house on the market as we would like to downsize, so keeping that show-ready, and working full time, and dealing with health issues, leaves us little time. We've got a few very close friends in our area that will pop over on occasion or we'll visit them for a few hours of laughter. My husband and I tend to be home-bodies though and we are content to be here together.

All work and no play.....there is some truth to that. You should make time for yourself to have some social life. But you probably do, just not time for more...right?

'course, if'n i get able to do such i'll prolly not've the time, lol. that's interestin' that some don't offer somethin' to the host? then 'gain, i reckon if'n folks switch off it all pans out.

@crazyhorseladycx Yes, I'm far to busy for multiple groups but will settle on the ones I like best and stick to those ones only and go to as many activities as I'm comfortable with.

It seems what ever interest you have, such as horses or perhaps a book club, you can find a nearby group. It's easy to start one too and pretty inexpensive to do it. Something like $12 a month to have a group. Some groups take up a weekly collection for the host and some don't.

@Jeanniemaries I own a casual boutique. So invariably I meet new people everyday. But there is no organized group like you mention.

It is a great pity that board games seem to have lost their popularity these days, no doubt due to the evolution of video games. I remember the days when every family had a decent selection of them.

It was great fun. While I was in it, it grew from nine or ten to 30 or 40 people meeting weekly. Later they formed into a guild which is complicated to do but gives them quite a bit of authority and power in the world of knitters. We always met in a coffee shop and lingered for hours. I learned to makes scarves, hats, sweaters and toys.

I applaud you for getting out and socialising - some new widows I know never go anywhere so they just vegetate. All your meet-ups sound great.

This is a great idea. I'm sure you have a lot of fun in these groups. I would love to see Lady in the Van. Maggie Smith is a great actress.

The crazy thing was I had no idea that movie was out and I was so excited to see it. It lived up to my expectations and I definitely recommend it if you get a chance to see it.
