They are never happy unless they are digging...

Digging

They don't seem happy unless they are digging a hole somewhere and get the chance to set up traffic lights along with lots of brightly coloured plastic. Not the busiest of roads, this local one, but with airport buses and more than a few cars from the industrial estate, it makes me glad I don't drive, these days. Once they have finished, whatever they are doing and make their way to the next hole in the ground, I wonder what they were digging for. At one time there would be a sign announcing what was going on, nowadays the reason is just another of life's mysteries! Assuming that once all the lights, coloured barriers and traffic cones are set up, they don't disappear for a week or three, making an even greater mystery. I am guessing this is happens the world over and not just in this small part.

What beats me is say the phone company did up a bit of road one week, cover the hole up and next week the gas people are in the same home followed by the water Why can't they all go in the hole together and then we have only one stupid set of roadworks for a week instead of 3 weeks on the trot every day almost

I somehat remember a plan, years ago, to co-ordinate digging up the road, but they decided it was all too difficult and that was that

It's happening here too. They are placing underground fiber optic cables, it will take a long time.

@Ronrybs I agree, I refused to have cable TV and I do not want fiber optic Internet, I am fine as I am. They are annoying with all those subscriptions.

Indeed it does happen here as well my friend. They are forever rooting up the place..it is wild here and madness as the traffic built up from their endless archaeological excavations never ends.

Why do you assume there's a reason for their digging? They're just doing what the do: digging. I would like to join them. Digging is fun. And then you get to fill it back up.

I tried digging once, I didn't like it. Too much like hard work!

It happens a lot in the US, and I think the companies doing the roadwork really milk the job. I know of one area in southern Illinois they have been on the same stretch of roadwork for over 2 years. Yup 2 years. Crazy.

Yep. Cone zones appear magically all over the place around here. Always during high traffic season.

Yeah you are right they love to dig up the road, even more so after they've just laid it, to which none makes sense to me.

I swear they hold off digging until the resurfacing is done, then all take turns to dig it up!

We have numerous pot holes in many of the streets and highways around here, caused, no doubt, by the snow and ice this winter. I drive very little, but there seems to be road work (which is a GOOD thing) on every street. I wish someone would invent a type of pavement that was more durable. I have actually heard that there are some attempts to come up with something better.

Yes, bad weather and heavy vehicles are killers to road surfaces. I suspect that a tougher surface will be rather expensive

Sometimes the only way to work out what is going on is from the company names on the vans that are usually parked up with several workmen sat inside drinking tea!!

I think there are more rental vehicles being used for these works. Are there more fly-by-night companies out there digging up the roads? Would account for the poor patching.

What I find interesting is how they dig up a piece and then a few weeks later dig it up again. No planning needed!

I don't know if they are happy digging or not. I cannot answer anywhere else but I know it happens here. There are times they dig because they are putting something new and not only the digging but the holes make it dangerous for people to walk.
