Assisted living good or bad?

Can anyone give me some insight on assisted living? My in-laws are getting up there in age, and we worry about them. It's getting harder on them to take care of each other, dad has Alzhimers, so some days are a real challenge. The kids think they should move into an assisted living facility, so someone could be there at all times to keep an eye one them, but they don't want to, mostly because of the expense.

It makes sense if they have the funds to do so - they should spend their money on making life as comfortable as possible for themselves. It would take the worry off your shoulders too.

They are too worried about spending their children's inheritance, when the kids would rather them be comfortable and safe.

@lilnana1111 They shouldn't worry about leaving money to the children when they are in need of it themselves.

my only 'xperience with assisted livin' was with my great grand, she moved into one 'n jest loved it. but, each's diff'rent. we found comfort that she'd access to 24/7 attendance when needed 'n she thrived with visitin' with the other folks who lived'n the complex. 'tis hard when they don't live close by 'n refuse to budge. 'n don't wish to spend the funds to get some care into the home's well. there's insurance that covers some'f that, but i think ya gotta've it fer several years prior to needin' it (gotta love those insurance scams, eh?) 'fore they'll pay. wishin' ya the best'f luck that all works out, hon. big hugs!!

I live in another country, we have those facilities here, they are partially covered by the medical insurance, for the rest people pay using their pensions, as they do not have to spend for their house.

As much as possible, let them live close to you. Nursing homes might take care of them physically, but a lot of the old ones living there are depressed. After all, why would you want to live in a place where you're not with your family, just with a bunch of strangers who probably don't even care about you? My mother works in a nursing home and I used to go there a lot. It's a depressing place. Why not let them live with you, or in a small home just a few doors away? Are there other family members who aren't as busy with their lives? What about finding someone you can trust to watch over them?

Assisted living is a little different than a nursing home. I agree, nursing homes are very depressing. I visit a friend in an assisted living facility, and she loves it, it's very nice, not depressing.
