Do You Take Chances?

Voltaire said: “Chance is a word void of sense; nothing can exist without a cause.” Hmmmm? I really have to think about that one. We, as humans, use the word “chance” a lot, don’t we? We can “take a chance” on doing something or not. Sometimes we feel that something is not worth the chance because it MIGHT go wrong. Think about all the ways that we use the word “chance” and think of something on which you decided that you would take the “chance?” Do you think the outcome was a result of “chance” or “cause?” For instance: Let’s say you bet on a horse race…and you won some money. Was the result because you TOOK the chance to bet on the horse, or was it the fact that the horse on which you happened to bet , WAS the fastest horse AND the fact that the horse would have won, whether you bet on it or not? Or if you lost the bet, was it because you TOOK the chance to bet or because the horse you chose, was NOT the fastest horse and would have lost whether you bet on it or not? And more importantly than a horse race, are ANY choices or chances we take in life. Is the result, the fact that we TOOK the chance, or is the outcome, a result of the circumstances that were “caused” by things about which we had no control? Hmmm. What do you think?

This is all too deep for me at this hour of the morning. I'd need more coffee!

LOL Yes, it takes some deep thinking and if you haven't had your coffee, you might need to drink an extra cup.

A real chance is taken when you are not sure whether the horse is the fastest or not. I firmly believe, there are certain occasions in life where you need to take chances and when you take chance be prepared for loss too.

I'm still thinking about it. We might reason that we are taking a chance on something but the result of whatever happens is something over which we have no control. That's why its called a "chance" on our side of the question, but the result is definitely "caused" by something beyond our control.

@IreneVincent I would like to give an example here, suppose you need to catch a train that will depart from station after 30 mins,For you it may take 25-30 mins to reach station. Considering it may take few mins more to reach station and knowing that you have only 30 mins, would you just give up or would you still take a chance...
