Oh, I Wish I Was Back In The Army

Or at least some part of my subconscious does. Every now and then I go through a phase of having dreams about being back in the Army. Sometimes I'm trying to find my way to my unit and keep getting sent to the wrong place. Other times I'm trying to find my uniforms and gear but no matter where I look I cannot find them. The last such dream took a really weird turn. I received orders to report for duty on my anniversary. The problem was I'd just bought a new semi-truck and was supposed to be making my first cross-country run. One of my old Army buddies showed up and offered to drive my truck for me. Neither of us have ever driven a big truck in real life. Then, the morning I was to report, August 27, it started snowing. I kept checking to see if training had been cancelled or delayed because of the snow, but it hadn't. Outside, the snow kept falling even though it was a warm day so I decided to walk. When I stepped out the door I realized the house wasn't the house I live in now, it was the house I grew up in. After walking through a neighborhood I didn't know I wound up at the office where I was to report for duty. A private took my information and told me to have a seat and wait to be called. I woke up before they called me. I don't try to interpret my dreams, and usually I don't remember them in such detail. But I do know my brain was busy last night collating and filing memories. Do you ever have dreams that mix up portions of your past?

Yes, I've had dreams like that...dreams that I was back in the Navy. Maybe it's because you never really leave the service, you just change from "active" to "permanently inactive" status.

I think that's part of it, and it seems they've become more frequent since my oldest was commissioned in the Air Froce, too. Must have brought a lot of my memories about my time in to the surface.

I often have dreams about people I grew up with, but the dream takes place in some weird location, and absolutely makes no sense.

I think dreams like that are part of our subconscious trying to file away memories and make connections between experiences. Then again, it could just be what we had for supper.

I think I daydream more than I dream at night--I don't dream at night that much.

I don't often have vivid dreams that I remember but when I do it seems the Army always gets working in somehow.

I have nothing but weird dreams. I should write discussions about them.

I do dream of being a teacher again sometimes. Very rarely though. Mostly I just enjoy oddly bizarre dreams.

Dreams are strange things aren't they? Overall, did you enjoy your time in the army?
