My Two Year Old Son Was Swearing

Canada
March 9, 2016 8:32am CST
According to the woman who ran the Sunshine Christian Day Care. My hubby had an opportunity to coach at our Alma Mater (a religious University in the midwest). He looked forward to it, me not so much. I took a few classes and worked in the mail room of the Student Union. Because hubby was part of the staff my classes were free and so was the daycare. So go ahead and ask me how angry I was when the leader of the Sunshine Christian Day Care took me into the office to say my two year old toddler who can't talk yet was swearing... He was what??? She said they teach the children how to say their names. Our son insisted his name was Billy Son of A B(swear word) I was outraged with that woman for even thinking my children were living with a couple of people who are not smart enough to speak without swearing.... A bad word was not in our vocabulary, never was, never will be... I calmed down and brought Billy into the office and after hugs and kisses I asked him to tell the lady what his name was. He proudly said Billy Son of A B(swear word) but it was muffled as he tried to get his tongue around the syllables. I laughed out loud and asked him “are you saying your name is Billy "our last name that starts with 'S” and he grinned and said yes... I glared at the woman, asking her if she could have pronounced our last name any better than he did if she was two years old and just learning to talk? She was embarrassed and apologized for thinking we would swear at our kids. Hubby and I had a good laugh about it later and worked hard to get him to pronounce that big name properly. We also decided we didn't want to stay at our alma mater. Their over the top Christian attitude drove us crazy as students. We decided it was a bit much to deal with as adults too. The next year we moved on thankfully and lived an interesting and fun life without swearing. And so did our Children.

Aw the little soul. That is funny but not. I would have been right ticked off at that woman and place.

It was a shock to us to realize just how overpowering the religious thoughts were on top of common sense. I was happy when the year was over.

Some words can be difficult for children. I know my son had trouble when he was little and I've heard more than one little boy try to say "truck" but it comes out sounding like a cuss word.

I've seen that too, its quite funny. This particular woman was the problem, not my son. Thankfully they all grow up into healthy adults.

@PainsOnSlate Over pious "Christian''? I wonder if that kind of person won't exceed heaven.

So, because he couldn't say the last name properly she thought he was saying that other word? Course, if he said son of a, that could have been why her mind went there. My daughter actually did swear when she was two, but I have to say she picked it up from me as I'd swear when playing nintendo games. I learned quick to quit with the swearing, and she quit saying that too. By the way, i saw you post on the side suggestion area, that's why i'm so slow in responding to this one.

@PainsOnSlate I get it now. I didn't get before why he'd say son or sound like the son of a part for the woman to jump to her conclusions. You'd think she'd have been looking at your last name at the time to see he was trying to sound it out the best he could.

Son -a- slurred in two year old talk is the beginning of our last name.. A Greek name with many sylables.. He never heard the phrase from either my husband or myself.. We just never were swearers, The nastiest thing I said out loud was oh crap. It just wasn't part of our language and I resented that woman's attitude... I just noticed the posts on the side, I'm glad to know that mine was there, so thanks for letting me know.

Some people need virtually no excuse to condemn. We had a lot of Polish immigrants in our school and they were always having to spell out their names for the teachers.

I think her being the boss she made it her job to judge everyone, what a waste of energy. The holier than thou attitude has always turned me right off.

@PainsOnSlate Me too. Many of these type of people are what I call 'Sunday Christians'. I don't know what the good Lord makes of some of them.

For someone who works in a day care she should have know he was just learning to talk. I would have been furious and I can certainly understand why you left that University. We have a religious University in our area. It's actually now where the Chicago Bears have their training camp. They offered my son a full ride scholarship but he declined for a couple of reasons. He could not wear short until after 3 pm. What? He wanted to know if his knees were obscene before 3 pm but not after. He also would have had to go to church service 5 nights a week or be fined 20 dollars every time he missed. That was just to much for him and he went with another university that also offered him a full ride scholarship.

My husband had a full scholarship at the college right out of high school. I went there thinking it would be fun but the art department wasn't great and I left after two years. I did meet my husband there and we stayed connected. I highly disliked chapel a couple of times a week and other aspics of the school. When discussing the option to work there as an adult, I remember saying ...we didn't like it there as kids, do you think we will like it as adults? We had no idea, but it felt the same as when I was a teenager...

@PainsOnSlate Yea I wouldn't have liked it there either. I don't want to be made to do anything much less forcing me into a religious participation. That is a personal choice. I was forced as a kid and I think because of that I no longer participate in religion at all.

Your story brightened my morning. I am sitting here sipping morning coffee and smiling at your post. It sounds like you have a wonderful, sweet child. Kids can say the funniest thing sometimes while trying to pronounce things correctly. Glad you found a new day care.

When we moved I returned back to the "Stay at home mom" but took in a couple of friends kids for some income. My kids were never in day care again. And thank you I'm glad you enjoyed it and it made you smile.

Wow would have been used to. But that age everything still sounds like a child swear weather they hear it or not. My 13 month says a few word of course he is my third baby so hears talking none stop. He will chip and sit and they both sound like sh!t. I laugh every time he says it and correct him him. The more they heart the better they get at saying as they get bigger. My 3.5 year can say dinosaur names way better then me in the correct way,

That woman had no idea he was trying to say his name, she just assumed we swore at home around our children. What an idiot she was..

It is funny the way little ones will learn to pronounce things. But not funny to be called in and lectured. I would not have behaved as well as you did, I might have proven her right lol

@PainsOnSlate I normally don't swear either but when someone is critical of my children, I have been known to be a bear!!! But of course only if the kids were innocent. Often they were not lol

At that age anyone trained to work with little ones should realize that they might not have perfect words yet.

@PainsOnSlate I have found, in some cases, Christian, can have a whole other meaning. Not all of the time but we've encountered that once too.

My mother loves to tell the story of how my grandmother taught me to swear when I was about two years old. My mother's mother was a woman who rarely if ever even said the word that sounds like what beavers build to stop the creek. But one day, when I was with her, the family dog got underfoot and nearly tripped my grandma, evidently causing her to slip and say d-m dog. I immediately parroted what she'd said and our beagle was d-m dog to me from then on.

@PainsOnSlate Actually she was petrified to have taught me the word. She was a woman who would scold others on their language and, according to my mother, probably only said that word three or four times in her whole life.

Isn't that funny, how a little word comes out and becomes a favorite word to a kid...your grandmother must have loved it...

I loved your story. Thanks for the laugh. When I got home that afternoon and hubby walked in I told him the story and he gave me the evil eye as if ...did you say that! I gave him the evil eye back and asked Billy to tell daddy what his name was and Billy let him know... It had nothing to do with me.... I know you've seen my name once in a while, imagine a two year old trying to say that... Billy was the easy part.

I am so glad you are the mom who trusts your kid. I don't understand why the woman has that thought, since your son was only two years old. As a stay-at-home mom, I am with my children all the time. Sometimes my son likes to "create" some new words on his own. Some sounds like swear words, but he definitely didn't mean it, as he has never hear any swear words before.

That woman must have been insane! My husband's university offered free day care for faculty, but I was a stay at home mom. I wouldn't have wanted young college kids watching my babies as a "learning experience".

This day care was run by adults, not students,it was for faculty, staff, and students to use as daycare. It was good for Billy, he liked it and was happy in the morning to go, if he hadn't enjoyed it, I would have stayed home with him, our daughter was in elementary school at the end of our street. I was home before school was out daily. We were there for one school year, we moved to Missouri and I was a stay at home mom again.
