I went in for the pre-op and that's when I discovered how much the nurses like my doc. Well, I had an idea because I had a friend who was a nurse who said she's heard good things about him. She worked in a different hospital than he did, but his reputation preceded him.
When they heard who was my surgeon, one kind of make an almost creepy movement with her hands, kind of gripping them, and said: "He's so good with the tissue."
But, at least I knew because of my nurse friend, that nurses aren't real generous with complements on doctors they don't have to work with all the time.
I barely got any sleep the night before, I'm not a great sleeper at the best of times anyway. I took a cab to the hospital because I wasn't asking anyone to drive me at 4 a.m. in the morning!
They took me back, had me undress and left me alone.
Then they put me on a gurney and stuck me full of needles and rolled me off to surgery.
I think I had my entire nurse team rolling me, well, I think there were 3 people doing it, it was nearly 20 years ago after all...
I had been warned that this was considered "day" surgery. That the day started when they took me to a room and they would try and get me out 23 hrs later.
I had already warned the nutritionist that I had some acute food allergies, and did, indeed, have to reject a couple of "meals" because of them.
I remember being shifted over to the surgical table, the mask being put on my face, cold stuff going into my IV and... the doc talking to me for a moment.
The next thing I know I'm waking up and my toe hurts.
My toe? They weren't doing anything to my toe! Why does my toe hurt? I'm confused, well, I've just been out for a few hours so I guess I have a right to be confused. I try to tell them about my toe, but I guess they think I'm upset because they still have the tube down my throat. I didn't even realize they still had that down there.
They take it out and I say "Toe! Toe!"
Well, I try to exclaim it, but its more of a croak.
Still they fix the compression sock so it isn't pinching my toe anymore and I'm happy. Well, happier anyway.
Off we go, rolling through halls until they get me to a room.
I have to crawl from the gurney to the bed, what fun...
Then I get to lay down again while the floor nurse comes in and takes over.
to be continued...

@GardenGerty me too, but not as bad as they used to, or maybe I fill them up more so they don't wrinkle as much...

I always jump in to the middle of your series. Now I have to go learn the other parts. I hate when my toe hurts.
