Independence up to what extent...

I have raised my two grandsons ages 5 and 7. We sleep together in one room for all those years. Now my daughter wanted them to be in a separate room and will be sleeping alone without me because she said that they should learn to be independent. But for me, it should be done gradually because it is not easy to change right away. We have feelings too, and the companionship that we built. I don't know if I am right on this, I don't want to create conflicting feeling with my daughter.

Thank you, Joy, but for me they are still very young to be left alone in one room.

I already have tried it but they slip into my room at the strike of dawn.

I am a firm believer in separate rooms, if for no other reason than independence. I love that you said they are ok when mom is home but when she's not they will sleep with you... When they are very young they need support but as they age they need independence.
