Independence up to what extent...

I have raised my two grandsons ages 5 and 7. We sleep together in one room for all those years. Now my daughter wanted them to be in a separate room and will be sleeping alone without me because she said that they should learn to be independent. But for me, it should be done gradually because it is not easy to change right away. We have feelings too, and the companionship that we built. I don't know if I am right on this, I don't want to create conflicting feeling with my daughter.

i started sleeping on my own around that age and been alone in my room ever since. if your grandchildren can do it, then by all means. its a good start for them towards independence.

@MGjhaud Yes, I am starting but it is so funny when you can see and feel their reaction.

Thank you, Joy, but for me they are still very young to be left alone in one room.

let them separate. one day they will miss your company, they are growing up after all.

I already have tried it but they slip into my room at the strike of dawn.

I don't know as at our place too we don't let kids sleep alone. I think they are small and you should do that once they grow up a bit.

I am a firm believer in separate rooms, if for no other reason than independence. I love that you said they are ok when mom is home but when she's not they will sleep with you... When they are very young they need support but as they age they need independence.

Hahaha.. Reine25, they just say Yes if their mother is around but if she is out they would secretly ask me if I could stay in the room with them.
