Forty Seconds

I absolutely hate being late for anything. I don't know how people live with themselves when they are always late.
On my last job there were always people coming in and clocking in at the very last possible second, and that was always late as there was a three minute leeway for clocking in.
I just don't understand that.
One thing I like doing is going to church on Saturday night versus Sunday morning because of my son's work schedule. If he starts at 7 PM then I go in the morning. If he starts at 5 I can go at night.
He was certain he started at 7 tonight, so when he told me to GET IN THE CAR at 5:40 I knew he was late for work, and as I was rushing into shoes and out the door I was also making some split second decisions - whether to go to church. Church starts at 6 PM and I dropped him off at 5:45 and headed for church. I did not have my Bible. I did not brush my teeth. I did not turn off the computer or the light in my office, and I did not turn off the kitchen light.
I kept eyeing the clock on the dashboard all the way to church. I knew it would be close, but I expected to be late. I followed two other people into the parking lot. It was a full house tonight.
I can't walk fast, so when I finally got inside I still saw a lot of people in the lobby as I headed for the sanctuary fully expecting to hear the music for the first song. I got in and the clock timer they have on the screen counting down the time to service was at :40. The sanctuary was full and the seat I normally sit in was taken, but not on the other side of the row. I sat with :14 seconds to spare.
I hate being late and that was cutting it closer than I've come to being late in a very long time.
So how do people live with themselves if they're late all the time? I couldn't stand it. I'm usually half an hour early for everything and fifteen minutes at the very minimum.
Thanks for reading.

sometimes it's a personal thing... and sometimes a cultural thing... I personally like to be a bit early for anything... but here in spain ... they are not very good time keepers at all.... even if they make a time... you can bet they will be late... and they do not apologize either ... it's normal for them... which when we first got here ... frustrated us... as being brits we liked to be punctual and if not then apologies... but we soon learnt we would get neither from the spanish.... lol's ...

@sueznewz2 With being in Spain as much as you are England, do you find yourself running late because of the routine of the Spanish?

@just4him That's a very good record and something to be proud of. I just remembered I was late to the superintendent's meeting in my school system, only because I was new to the town, and the meeting place was changed. No navigation then, so I got lost. So embarrassed when I got there. As I opened the auditorium door, it squeaked and everyone turned around to look at me. To top it all off, the superintendent said hello to me and walked from the podium to give me a kiss! I was mortified!!!!!!

Okay, that reminded me of when I was late, and I can't remember my excuse at the moment, but I know the clock was not my friend this past Thanksgiving. I was meeting my family at a restaurant and I was the last one to arrive and was getting calls from my sister as I was turning down the road to the restaurant. When I got there everyone said, Valerie, you're usually the first to get here. I know. And I felt real bad.
Still the number of times I've been late in my life can all be counted on one hand or less.

I hate being late and always try to get where I need to be like you at least 15 minutes before time even if it means I have to get a bus that gets me where I need to be an hour earlier (which is hard if it is the first bus of the day I need to get as it was when I was working at one place and the first bus that past where I lived got me to work just under the wire at times).

@just4him For many places, but the route then I could get on where I lived and get off in front of the nursing home where I lived as both were on the same route. But I don't live there no more and a new company redid routes several years ago (from out of town) and made the system the worse it ever been as where you used to connect to get another bus without going to the station was made impossible as they don't meet and you have to wait 45 minutes for the next one (and this is to catch one of the buses that don't go to the main station)

There's no reason for it most of the time. Every once in a while there is no escaping it no matter how much planning ahead you do.

I find I would rather wait for someone than have them wait for me.

Sometimes it's good to be early as you can be seen earlier in some cases.

Everybody knows what time they need to be anywhere. So why not take the time to be there on time? Prepare well ahead of time so you're not rushing and forgetting everything just to be late.
